In a high-stakes gamble, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has opted to retain head coach Warren Gatland for the 2025 Six Nations Championship, despite Wales enduring a winless 2024 campaign. The decision comes after an extensive review into the state of Welsh rugby, with WRU CEO Abi Tierney acknowledging that Gatland’s position was very much on the line.
WRU Backs Gatland, But Demands Improvement
While the WRU seriously considered wholesale changes, they have ultimately chosen to give Gatland another chance to right the ship. However, this reprieve comes with a clear mandate: deliver improved results on the field. Tierney emphasized that Gatland’s job security is directly tied to the team’s performance going forward.
I have had a number of very honest conversations with Warren and I will make no secret of the fact that his position was on the line as we undertook our review. Further than that, like any head coach in any sport, he knows the security of his position is directly related to the performances of the team and that this is a situation that will continue to intensify.

Gatland Welcomes Scrutiny, Believes in Squad Potential
For his part, Gatland appears to have taken the review process and the pressure on his position in stride. He expressed appreciation for the feedback and constructive criticism, while reaffirming his belief in the potential of the current Wales squad.
This group of players has a huge amount of potential and we will be working incredibly hard together to turnaround our fortunes on the pitch. We know, more than ever, we will be judged on competitiveness, on success and on winning during the 2025 campaign.
– Warren Gatland, Wales Head Coach
Leadership Changes and Additional Resources
While Gatland remains in charge, there will be changes to the team behind him. Notably, Nigel Walker has resigned from his role as executive director of rugby for the WRU. Huw Bevan will step in as interim head of performance to help lead the program alongside community director Geraint John.
The WRU has also promised Gatland additional resources to help drive the turnaround effort. This will include:
- Appointing a new high-performance advisory panel featuring ex-Wales internationals and prominent coaches
- Improving mentoring support for players
- Bringing in new mental skills resources
- Reviewing the entire high-performance structure of the WRU
2025 Six Nations Looms Large
All eyes will be on Wales and Gatland when the 2025 Six Nations kicks off. After a disastrous 2024, anything short of a significant improvement will likely spell the end of his tenure. The pressure is on for the experienced coach to prove he still has what it takes to lead Wales back to the top of the international rugby ladder.
Can Gatland rediscover the magic that made him one of the most successful coaches in Welsh rugby history? Or will 2025 be his final stand? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the stakes couldn’t be higher for both Gatland and the proud rugby nation of Wales.
