Veteran DE Cameron Jordan Eyes 15th Season in NFL

In a league where the average NFL career lasts just over three years, New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan stands out as a rare iron man. The 35-year-old team captain and six-time Pro Bowler just wrapped up his 14th season, all with the Saints who drafted him 24th overall in 2011. But as Jordan enters the twilight of his career, the question looms: will there be a 15th season, and will it be in New Orleans?

Jordan, who signed a contract extension in 2023 that runs through 2025, has made it clear he hopes to play at least 15 seasons. “I love this game, so until my love runs dry or they tell me differently, I’m here,” he said. His passion remains evident – Jordan rarely misses a practice and coaches praise his consistently professional approach.

An Uncertain Future

However, Sunday’s 25-10 loss to the Raiders, potentially Jordan’s last home game as a Saint, cast a shadow of uncertainty. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he acknowledged. “As much as I feel like I can play three, four more years … whatever it is, I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”

Jordan’s current contract carries a hefty $20 million cap hit in 2025, with only $1.5 million of his base salary guaranteed. Earlier this season, his role diminished under a new coaching staff before he re-established himself as a key contributor. But will that be enough?

“If I don’t have a job, maybe my play wasn’t good. … You turn on the film, you tell me where I slowed down and we’ll talk about it.”

Bleeding Black and Gold

If it comes down to it, would the proud career Saint consider a pay cut to stay in New Orleans? “That’s what agents are for,” Jordan demurred. “Me, I’m willing to work. I love being a part of the city. The Saints have been the only home I’ve known, so if you want to shut that door for me, you’re going to have to shut it for me because I’m not going to do it to myself.”

Jordan’s deep connection to New Orleans shone through after the game as he signed autographs for fans who have supported the team even through a difficult season. His extended family, including his father Steve, a former Vikings tight end, watched from the stands in what could be a farewell.

A Soldier’s Mentality

In the end, Jordan makes one thing crystal clear – his love for the game burns as strong as ever, and he will compete with everything he has for as long as he can, even if his jersey changes. “As much as I bleed, I think I only bleed black and gold,” he said, “but if you force me to go bleed somewhere else, a soldier fights wherever, whenever, however.”

The Saints and the NFL will soon decide if Cameron Jordan’s illustrious career continues marching forward. But one thing is certain – this soldier won’t lay down his sword without a fight.
