The Tennessee Volunteers received some welcome news on Monday as they prepare for their pivotal SEC clash with the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend. Head coach Josh Heupel revealed that star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who suffered a worrying head injury in the team’s win over Mississippi State, is expected to be ready for action come Saturday.
Iamaleava, the highly-touted true freshman, had been enjoying his most productive outing against an SEC opponent before being forced out of the game late in the first half. The 6-foot-5 gunslinger had completed 8 of his 13 passes for an impressive 174 yards and two touchdowns, staking the Vols to a 20-7 lead at the break.
However, Iamaleava did not return for the second half after being evaluated by team doctors for what sources described as concussion-like symptoms. Redshirt senior Gaston Moore stepped in and managed the game effectively, going 5-for-8 for 38 yards as Tennessee sealed a 33-14 victory. But the status of their young star remained uncertain heading into a crucial matchup with the Bulldogs.
Heupel Offers Positive Update on Iamaleava
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Coach Heupel struck an optimistic tone about Iamaleava’s availability for the Georgia game. “Nico was with the team and had a really good day this morning during our team activities and meetings,” Heupel said. “We feel like he’s going to be in great shape for Saturday.”
The coach did note that the team will continue monitoring Iamaleava’s progress throughout the week, with the SEC-mandated availability report providing official updates starting on Wednesday night. But the initial signs appear promising for the Vols’ electric young passer.
A Season-Defining Moment
Having a healthy Iamaleava under center could prove vital for Tennessee’s chances of pulling off the upset between the hedges. In his five previous SEC contests, the precocious QB had accounted for just three touchdowns while turning the ball over five times and absorbing 15 sacks.
But the flashes of brilliance he displayed against Mississippi State — the poise in the pocket, the zip on his passes, the ability to extend plays and find receivers downfield — served notice of his tantalizing potential. For a Tennessee offense that has struggled mightily to find consistency in conference play, a locked-in Iamaleava could be the spark that ignites an explosive performance.
They will certainly need one to keep pace with a Georgia team desperate to get back in the win column. The defending national champions are still smarting from a humbling 28-10 defeat at Ole Miss, just their second loss in the past two seasons and the first time they’ve dropped back-to-back games since Kirby Smart’s debut campaign in 2016.
“This isn’t the time to feel sorry for ourselves,” Smart told the media on Monday. “We’ve got to correct our mistakes and come out with the kind of fight and execution that represents Georgia football. Playing at home, in front of our fans, I expect us to respond the right way.”

For two proud programs with championship aspirations, Saturday’s result could make or break their seasons. And the presence of a healthy, confident Nico Iamaleava might just tilt the scales in Tennessee’s favor.
