In a major boost for their title aspirations, the Kansas City Current have secured the long-term future of star striker and reigning NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga with a new three-year contract extension. The deal comes on the back of the Malawi international’s record-breaking debut season in the NWSL.
Record-Shattering Debut Campaign
Chawinga took the league by storm in 2024, netting an unprecedented 20 goals to shatter the previous single-season scoring record. Her prolific form in front of goal saw her run away with the Golden Boot while also being crowned the league’s Most Valuable Player.
This year, we hope to bring the trophy home for the fans, for KC. My team has been good to me and they treated me well last season. My teammates are kind, my coach is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible. All the support, it feels like home here, that’s why I decided to extend my contract with the KC Current.

Unfinished Business
Despite her individual accolades, Chawinga was unable to lead the Current to the NWSL title in her debut season. They suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the eventual champion Orlando Pride in a thrilling playoff semifinal.
The disappointing end to an otherwise spectacular season has left Chawinga hungry for more as she aims to deliver Kansas City their first ever NWSL Championship in 2025. With their MVP firmly committed for the next three years, the Current will be among the favorites heading into the new campaign.
Vote of Confidence
Current general manager Caitlin Carducci emphasized the importance of securing Chawinga’s signature:
Securing Temwa’s long-term future in Kansas City was a significant priority this offseason. She had an amazing debut season, but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together. We’re excited to see her wearing the Current crest for years to come.

International Pedigree
In addition to lighting up the NWSL, the 24-year-old Chawinga has established herself as the talisman for the Malawi women’s national team. She powered the Scorchers to qualification for the 2024 Africa Women Cup of Nations and will be aiming to make an impact on the continental stage this summer.
With a lethal combination of blistering pace, world-class finishing, and a tireless work ethic, Temwa Chawinga has rapidly become one of the most feared strikers on the planet. Having conquered the NWSL in her very first season, she now has her sights set on delivering glory to Kansas City and Malawi in the years to come. As she enters her prime, the best may be yet to come from this extraordinary talent.
