The South East Melbourne Phoenix’s quest for an NBL playoff spot just got exponentially more difficult. In a devastating development, the club announced that star American import guard Derrick Walton Jr. will miss the remainder of the NBL regular season due to a high-grade hamstring tear suffered in Saturday’s game against the Brisbane Bullets. The injury comes at the worst possible time for a Phoenix squad fighting tooth and nail for a spot in the NBL Finals.
Phoenix Playoff Hopes Hanging by a Thread
Currently sitting in 5th place with a 13-14 record, the Phoenix have little margin for error in the hyper-competitive NBL. Every remaining game is essentially a must-win, and the loss of Walton, their floor general and primary facilitator, is a crushing blow.
Walton, who previously won NBL Finals MVP with the Sydney Kings, had been instrumental in the Phoenix’s midseason resurgence under new head coach Josh King. The crafty lefty was averaging an impressive 17.2 points and 5.1 assists per game while shooting a scorching 41% from three-point range. His steady hand, sharp decision-making and knockdown shooting kept the Phoenix offense humming.
Derrick has worked incredibly hard to recover from his earlier injury and play a pivotal role in the resurgence of the team in the past few months, so it’s a real blow to have him go down again and we will support him in every way possible in his recovery.

Can Phoenix Rise From the Ashes?
Without their offensive engine in Walton, it’s hard to envision the Phoenix having enough firepower to hang with the NBL’s elite squads down the stretch and into the playoffs. The remaining backcourt rotation of Cam Gliddon, Kyle Adnam and Reuben Te Rangi will need to step up in a major way to fill the massive void.
There is a sliver of hope for Phoenix fans – the club did not completely rule out a Walton return should they defy the odds and qualify for the NBL Finals. But first, they’ll need to claw their way into the postseason without their star playmaker, a daunting task in this unforgiving league.
The Road Ahead
Here’s a look at SEM’s remaining regular season schedule:
- Feb 17 vs Adelaide 36ers (Home)
- Feb 20 @ Perth Wildcats (Away)
- Feb 23 vs Cairns Taipans (Home)
- Feb 25 vs New Zealand Breakers (Home)
- Mar 3 @ Illawarra Hawks (Away)
Of those 5 games, only the 36ers have a worse record than the Phoenix. Even with a softer remaining slate, it’s hard to see SEM winning more than 2 or 3 of those contests without Walton leading the charge. And in the top-heavy NBL, 15 or 16 wins is unlikely to be enough to crack the top 4.
The Phoenix organization, to their credit, remain outwardly optimistic that they can weather this storm, rally around each other and still make a spirited playoff push. But behind closed doors, the mood is surely much more grim. Losing your best player and leader in crunch time is a nightmare scenario for any professional sports team with postseason aspirations.
For neutrals, it’s a shame that we likely won’t get to see Walton on the big stage of the NBL Finals. He’s the type of dynamic playmaker and born competitor built for playoff intensity and drama. His injury also robs fans of a potentially electric first round matchup between the Phoenix and one of the league’s heavyweight contenders.
Silver Linings
If there’s a silver lining in this dark cloud for SEM, it’s that Walton’s injury occurred with enough games left for them to still determine their own fate. Had it happened just a couple weeks later, their playoff dreams would have been dead on arrival. This way, they at least have a puncher’s chance, however slim.
Phoenix supporters can also take solace in the fact that the organization seems committed to a long-term vision under the promising rookie head coach Josh King. With Walton expected to make a full recovery in time for next season, the SEM Phoenix can regroup in the offseason and mount a more serious playoff charge in NBL24 and beyond. The pieces are in place for this franchise to become a perennial contender.
But for now, all they can do is strap on their boots, dig deep within themselves and fight like hell to extend their season. The odds are stacked heavily against them, but that’s the beauty of sports – there’s always a chance for an underdog to shock the world. Never underestimate the power of belief and an indomitable competitive spirit.
The SEM Phoenix now face the ultimate gut check. We’ll soon find out what this team is made of, and if they have the fortitude to overcome this monumental loss and defy the basketball gods. It’s going to take a superhuman effort and some magic, but hey, that’s why they’re called the Phoenix right? Time to once again rise from the ashes, with or without their star.
