In a surprising move, the Seattle Kraken have reacquired dynamic winger Daniel Sprong from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for future considerations. The deal, announced Friday, marks a homecoming for Sprong, who spent parts of two productive seasons with the Kraken before being traded last summer.
Sprong Set to Provide Offensive Spark
The 26-year-old Dutchman arrives in Seattle looking to reignite the scoring touch that made him a fan favorite during his previous stint with the team. In his last full season with the Kraken in 2022-23, Sprong notched a career-high 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games, playing a key role in the franchise’s first-ever playoff appearance.
Known for his quick release and penchant for highlight-reel goals, Sprong’s return could provide a much-needed boost to a Kraken offense that has struggled to find the back of the net consistently this season. Through 14 games, Seattle sits 21st in the league with a modest 2.79 goals per game.
Familiar Face, New Challenge
Sprong’s journey has taken him to six NHL teams since becoming a full-time player in 2018-19, including stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, and most recently, the Detroit Red Wings. Despite his nomadic career path, the skilled winger has consistently showcased his scoring prowess, potting 18 goals and 43 points for the Red Wings last season.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Daniel back to the Kraken family,” said a team source familiar with the trade. “His speed, skill, and scoring touch will be valuable assets as we look to climb the standings and make a push for the playoffs.”
Kraken Seeking Consistency
Seattle’s early-season struggles have been compounded by a lack of secondary scoring. Beyond the top line of Jared McCann, Jordan Eberle, Brandon Montour, and Eeli Tolvanen, who have combined for half of the team’s goals, offensive contributions have been hard to come by.
The Kraken will be hoping that Sprong’s arrival can help alleviate some of that pressure and provide a spark to a team that has won just five of its first 14 games. With the Western Conference playoff race already taking shape, every point will be crucial as Seattle looks to avoid missing the postseason for the second consecutive year.
New Era, Familiar Expectations
Sprong’s return also coincides with a new chapter in Kraken history, as the team looks to rebound from a disappointing 2023-24 campaign that saw them part ways with inaugural head coach Dave Hakstol. Under the guidance of newly-minted bench boss Dan Bylsma, a two-time Stanley Cup winner as a player and coach, Seattle will be aiming to recapture the magic that made them the NHL’s most surprising success story just two seasons ago.
“Daniel is a proven scorer at this level,” noted an NHL scout who has followed Sprong’s career closely. “If he can find chemistry with his new linemates and rediscover the form he showed in his last stint with the Kraken, he could be a real difference-maker for this team.”
As the Kraken prepare for a crucial stretch of games that could define their season, all eyes will be on Sprong to see if he can recapture the magic that made him a fan favorite in the Emerald City. With a blend of speed, skill, and scoring touch, the stage is set for the Dutch dynamo to write the next chapter in his fascinating NHL story – and perhaps, to help the Kraken rediscover their winning ways in the process.
