The Colorado Rockies have reached an agreement with left-handed reliever Lucas Gilbreath on a one-year, $785,000 contract for the upcoming season, narrowly beating the deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.
Gilbreath Returns from Tommy John Surgery
Gilbreath, 28, is coming off a shortened 2023 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of that year. The southpaw made a speedy recovery, returning to the big leagues in mid-August and making three appearances before landing back on the injured list with shoulder inflammation.
In parts of three major league seasons, all with the Rockies, Gilbreath has compiled a 5-2 record with a 4.36 ERA across 96 relief outings and one spot start. Known for his ability to generate ground balls and handle left-handed hitters, he figures to be an important piece of Colorado’s bullpen in 2024.
Rockies Secure Bullpen Depth
By locking up Gilbreath, the Rockies maintain an experienced left-handed option to help navigate the later innings. According to a team source, “Lucas has proven himself as a reliable arm out of our ‘pen. We’re excited to have him back at full strength this season.”
The Rockies’ relief corps posted a 4.85 ERA last season, the third-highest mark in the National League. With several young arms still developing and a hitter-friendly home park, having steady veterans like Gilbreath to call upon will be crucial for manager David Hamilton.
A Vote of Confidence
Gilbreath was one of three arbitration-eligible Rockies signed ahead of the deadline, along with right-handers Jordan Sheffield and Justin Lawrence. The commitment shown by the front office, even after an injury-plagued year, speaks to the organization’s belief in Gilbreath’s ability to bounce back.
“We’ve seen the impact Lucas can have when healthy. He’s an integral part of our team, both on the field and in the clubhouse. We’re looking forward to seeing him back on the mound,” said Rockies GM Matt Clough.
What to Expect in 2024
If Gilbreath can regain his pre-surgery form, he’ll provide the Rockies with a much-needed left-handed presence capable of facing hitters from both sides of the plate. His ground ball-inducing sinker and sweeping slider can be particularly effective at Coors Field, where limiting extra-base hits is paramount.
Look for Gilbreath to be eased back into high-leverage roles early on as he reestablishes himself. But if he can stay healthy, there’s no reason the resilient reliever can’t reclaim his place as one of the Rockies’ most trusted late-inning arms.
With their arbitration questions now settled, the Rockies can focus on addressing their remaining roster needs ahead of spring training. And with Lucas Gilbreath locked into the relief mix, they can count on at least one familiar face in the bullpen as they aim to rebound from a challenging 2023 season.
