In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Payton Washington, a freshman at Baylor University, not only survived a harrowing shooting incident but also went on to clinch a national title in acrobatics and tumbling just one year later. Her story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the unwavering support of a loving mother.
A Dream Derailed
On April 17, 2023, Payton’s life took a terrifying turn when she was shot three times while carpooling home from cheerleading practice. The bullets ruptured her spleen and pierced her diaphragm and stomach, leaving her in critical condition. As she lay in a hospital bed, Payton feared her dreams of joining Baylor’s acclaimed acrobatics and tumbling team were shattered.
A Mother’s Love
Payton’s mother, Angela Washington, has been her rock since before she was born. Diagnosed with a life-threatening cyst during pregnancy, doctors advised Angela to terminate. Instead, she carried Payton to term, and the baby girl defied the odds by surviving a risky lung surgery. Angela’s unwavering faith in her daughter’s strength never wavered, even in the face of this new challenge.
“She’s mentally tougher than probably anybody you’ll ever meet. I tell her all the time: You’re just different. You’re built different.”

The Road to Recovery
With her mother by her side, Payton embarked on a grueling rehabilitation process. The once-agile athlete struggled to even get off the couch, but she refused to give up. Driven by a desire to make her mother proud and the support of the Baylor team, Payton pushed through the pain and slowly regained her strength.
A Triumphant Return
Miraculously, just two months after being cleared for full activity, Payton took to the mat for Baylor’s season opener against Oregon. In a stunning display of grit and talent, she earned a personal best score and the NCATA Freshman of the Week title. Her performance set the tone for a dominant season, with Baylor entering the national championship undefeated.
A National Title and a New Purpose
On April 27, 2024, one year and ten days after the shooting, Payton helped lead Baylor to its ninth consecutive national title. Named an NCATA All-American and Division I Freshman of the Year, Payton had not only reclaimed her dream but also found a new purpose. Her experience propelled her into advocacy, working with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to champion education and reform.
“I want to do anything I can to help. I just didn’t know that that was needed of me.”
