The Denver Nuggets will be without one of their key players for the foreseeable future. Head coach Michael Malone announced before Friday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers that forward Aaron Gordon will miss at least the next two contests due to a right calf strain.
Injury Deja Vu For Gordon
While Malone doesn’t anticipate an extended absence for the 29-year-old, it’s an all too familiar situation. Gordon previously missed 10 games earlier this season with a similar calf issue. The injury bug bit again in Wednesday’s 110-100 loss to the Phoenix Suns, as Gordon exited in the third quarter after feeling discomfort in the troublesome calf.
“AG will be out tonight and tomorrow, and then we’ll reevaluate going forward. I just don’t think it’s going to be an extended absence. He’ll definitely miss the next two [games], and then we’ll go from there.”

Key Cog In Denver’s Machine
Gordon’s versatile skill set makes him an integral part of Denver’s success. The springy forward is averaging 13.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game this season – good for fifth on the team in scoring. His ability to guard multiple positions and thrive without the ball in his hands has been invaluable playing alongside two-time MVP Nikola Jokić.
After being acquired from the Orlando Magic at the 2021 trade deadline, Gordon has found an ideal role in the Mile High City. He’s a critical piece of a Nuggets team with championship aspirations, but they’ll now have to scramble to replace his production in the short-term.
Next Men Up For Nuggets
With Gordon out, expect forwards Jeff Green and Bruce Brown to see an uptick in minutes. Sharpshooter Michael Porter Jr. may also be asked to take on a larger offensive role. What Denver will miss most is the defensive versatility and experience that the eight-year vet brings to the table.
Selected fourth overall by the Magic in the 2014 draft, Gordon has developed into one of the league’s most well-rounded forwards. For his career, he’s averaged a solid 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. With 42 games left on Denver’s regular season docket, getting him healthy for the playoff push will be paramount.
- Gordon has started 30 of 31 games played for the Nuggets this season
- Denver currently holds the top spot in the Western Conference standings
The Nuggets’ depth will be tested as Gordon recovers from this nagging calf issue. They host the Detroit Pistons on Saturday before embarking on a four-game road trip next week. With no definitive timeline for his return, Denver must prove it can maintain the top seed in the West without one of its most valuable weapons.
