The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2024 season with high expectations, but those playoff dreams quickly faded as the team stumbled to a disappointing 7-9 record. Now, as they prepare for their final game, a home matchup against the Washington Commanders, the spotlight is squarely on head coach Mike McCarthy and his uncertain future with the franchise.
McCarthy, along with his entire coaching staff, are in the final year of their contracts. Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has been complimentary of McCarthy’s handling of the team amid a flurry of injuries, but he’s stopped short of guaranteeing the coach’s return in 2025. It’s a precarious position for a coach who, just a few months ago, seemed poised to lead the Cowboys on a deep postseason run.
A Season of Struggles
The Cowboys entered the year with a roster that, on paper, looked built to contend. But a rash of injuries quickly derailed those plans. The team never seemed to find its footing, struggling to string together wins and failing to keep pace in a competitive NFC East.
Through it all, McCarthy remained steadfast, preaching the importance of focusing on the task at hand and not getting caught up in the swirling speculation about his job security. But as the losses mounted, the questions only grew louder.
Players Voice Support
Despite the disappointing results, McCarthy seems to have maintained the support of his locker room. Several key players, including quarterback Dak Prescott and linebacker Micah Parsons, have publicly endorsed their coach, praising his leadership and ability to keep the team focused amid adversity.
“I think the future is bright and we have a lot of things in place here,” McCarthy said. “We need to take a step back after next week and obviously a lot of decisions got to be made, a lot of business decisions got to be made because of our contract situation and that’s what we’ll do.”

Still, player support can only carry a coach so far. Ultimately, it’s the results on the field that matter most. And in that regard, McCarthy and his staff have fallen short of expectations.
Uncertain Future
As the final seconds tick off the clock on Sunday, the focus will immediately shift to the future. Will Jones opt for continuity and bring McCarthy back for another shot? Or will he decide it’s time for a fresh start and a new voice to lead the Cowboys?
For his part, McCarthy insists he’s not focused on his own future, instead pouring all his energy into preparing his team for one final battle. It’s an approach his coaches are taking as well, even as they face their own job uncertainty.
“There’s not much I haven’t seen in this business,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. “I saw what I think is a Hall of Fame coach by the name of Marty Schottenheimer get fired after 14-2. So what I’ve learned through the years is you’re promised 17 games or 16 games whatever it is and you owe that to your team.”
It’s a sobering reality in a business where success is demanded and patience is often in short supply. For McCarthy and his staff, all they can do is focus on the task at hand and hope their body of work is enough to earn them another chance.
The Cowboys entered 2024 with Super Bowl aspirations. They’ll end it with far more questions than answers. And for Mike McCarthy, his future in Dallas hangs in the balance, with a single game potentially deciding his coaching fate.
As the saying goes, the NFL is a results-driven business. And on Sunday, against Washington, McCarthy has one final chance to prove he’s still the right man to lead the Cowboys back to the promised land. A land they haven’t reached in far too long.
