Michigan Lands Top Transfer RB Justice Haynes from Alabama

The Michigan Wolverines received a major boost to their 2025 backfield with the signing of Alabama transfer running back Justice Haynes, the program announced Friday. Ranked as the No. 3 running back in the transfer portal by ESPN, Haynes brings immediate star power to a Michigan offense in need of playmakers.

A former top-25 overall recruit in the class of 2023, the 5-foot-11, 210-pound Haynes heads to Ann Arbor with two years of eligibility remaining. He emerged as a key contributor for the Crimson Tide as a sophomore last season, finishing third on the team with 448 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Filling the Void

The addition of Haynes helps the Wolverines reload a rushing attack that lost its top two running backs from the 2024 squad. Seniors Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards combined for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground last year before moving on.

While rising sophomore Jordan Marshall showed flashes with 100 yards in the Reliaquest Bowl win over Alabama, Haynes provides an instant infusion of proven talent. His downhill, physical running style should fit seamlessly into Michigan’s pro-style offense under second-year coach Sherrone Moore.

Portal Success

Haynes becomes the eighth transfer to join the Wolverines this offseason as they look to rebound from a disappointing 8-5 campaign in Moore’s debut. Other key additions include:

  • Mikey Keene, QB (Fresno State)
  • Donaven McCulley, WR (Indiana)
  • Brady Norton, OL (Cal Poly)

Michigan struggled mightily on offense in 2024, ranking just 113th nationally in scoring at a paltry 22 points per game. Upgrading the talent and depth across the unit was clearly a priority for Moore and his staff.

Poised for a Bounce Back

With Haynes in the fold and other reinforcements on the way, the Wolverines appear well-positioned to make major strides in Moore’s second season at the helm. If the offense can take a step forward to complement what should remain a stout defense, Michigan could quickly return to contention in the rugged Big Ten East.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Justice to the Michigan football family. He’s a tremendous talent with a bright future, and we can’t wait to get to work with him in the maize and blue.”

– Sherrone Moore, Michigan Head Coach

For Haynes, the transfer to Michigan offers an opportunity to take on an even larger role than he had at Alabama. If he can seize the starting job and produce at a high level, the former blue-chip recruit could quickly put himself on the radar of NFL scouts.

The Wolverines open the 2025 season at home against Central Michigan on August 30th. With spring practices set to begin in just a few weeks, all eyes in Ann Arbor will be on Haynes and Michigan’s revamped offense as they look to author a resurgent campaign and restore the program’s championship aspirations.
