The New York Mets continue to make waves this offseason, reaching an agreement with coveted free agent reliever A.J. Minter on a two-year, $22 million contract pending a physical, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday. The deal, which was first reported by SNY, also includes an opt-out for Minter after the 2025 season.
Minter, a 31-year-old left-hander, has been a vital piece of the Atlanta Braves‘ bullpen during their recent string of success. Since debuting in 2017, he has compiled a solid 3.28 ERA across 384 relief appearances. The reliever was an integral part of Atlanta’s World Series championship run in 2021 and followed that up with his most impressive campaign the next year, posting a 2.06 ERA over 75 games.
Although Minter was limited to just 39 appearances in 2024 due to hip inflammation, he remained effective when healthy, recording a 2.62 ERA in 34 ⅓ innings pitched primarily in a setup role. His addition provides the Mets with a much-needed left-handed presence in the backend of their bullpen to complement star closer Edwin Diaz.
Addressing the Bullpen
The Mets have made it a priority this winter to acquire a top-tier reliever to pair with Diaz in high-leverage situations late in games. Minter fits that bill perfectly as one of the best southpaws available on the free agent market. New York’s relief corps currently features just one other left-handed option on the 40-man roster in Alex Young, so Minter helps balance out the bullpen with another quality lefty.
Minter’s signing comes just one day after the Mets agreed to terms with veteran outfielder and designated hitter Jesse Winker on a one-year deal. Winker is expected to serve primarily as a DH against right-handed pitching this upcoming season.
The Alonso Question
While the Mets have been active in free agency, one glaring question mark remains – the future of homegrown star first baseman Pete Alonso. The two sides have engaged in contract discussions about a potential reunion, but talks have recently stalled over financial terms on a proposed three-year deal, according to a source.
If the Mets are unable to re-sign Alonso, they have a few in-house candidates to fill the void at first base. Breakout third baseman Mark Vientos could slide over to first, opening up the hot corner for prospects like Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio or Luisangel Acuna to seize a starting role.
We’re thrilled to add a proven high-leverage reliever like A.J. to our bullpen mix. He strengthens our pitching staff significantly.
– Mets GM on the Minter signing
With Spring Training on the horizon, the Mets have shored up their relief pitching by bringing in one of the best lefty options on the open market in Minter. The talented southpaw brings World Series pedigree and a track record of excellence to a bullpen in need of another late-inning weapon. Now the waiting game continues to see if the club can lock up their All-Star slugger Alonso to keep their offensive core intact for the long haul.
