LSU and Texas Tech Emerge as Top Transfer Portal Winners for 2025

The winter transfer portal has once again reshaped the college football landscape, as players seek new opportunities and coaches scramble to fill roster holes. With the window closing soon, some programs have emerged as clear winners in the high-stakes game of transfer recruiting. But others are licking their wounds after losing key starters and facing uncertain futures.

Portal Winners Making Playoff Pushes

Several schools have made significant splashes by landing elite talent from the portal. The LSU Tigers and Texas Tech Red Raiders stand out as two of the biggest winners so far.

LSU is assembling a star-studded transfer class under coach Brian Kelly, headlined by former Kentucky receiver Barion Brown and Oklahoma wideout Nic Anderson. The Tigers have also bolstered their defense with top-ranked cornerback Mansoor Delane from Virginia Tech and edge rusher Patrick Payton from Florida State. With a much-improved roster, expectations are soaring for LSU to compete for SEC and national titles in 2025.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech is going all-in on a Big 12 championship run by investing heavily in the portal. The Red Raiders beat out Oklahoma and Florida for electric Miami (OH) receiver Reggie Virgil. They shored up the trenches by signing the portal’s No. 2 offensive tackle Howard Sampson from UNC and No. 2 defensive tackle Lee Hunter from UCF. If their big bets pay off, Texas Tech could have the firepower to crash the College Football Playoff.

Surging SEC Squads Loading Up

Other SEC teams making noise in the portal include Auburn and Ole Miss. The Tigers scored arguably the biggest prize by luring former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold, who has immense potential despite an up-and-down freshman year. Coach Hugh Freeze also nabbed No. 1 portal receiver Eric Singleton Jr. out of Georgia Tech, giving Arnold an elite weapon to target downfield.

Not to be outdone, the Rebels are doing what they always do under Lane Kiffin — reloading with high-end transfers on both sides of the ball. Ole Miss pilfered three players from portal-depleted Arkansas in offensive lineman Patrick Kutas, tight end Luke Hasz, and corner Jaylon Braxton. Disruptive Nebraska defensive end Princewill Umanmielen and Grambling tackling machine Andrew Jones should make immediate impacts as well.

Oregon Ducks Poised to Defend Title

The reigning national champs haven’t needed to make a huge portal splash, but Oregon has been surgical with its additions as it gears up to repeat. The Ducks landed former Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman, the No. 1 defensive back in the portal, and massive Nevada tackle Isaiah World to protect the edges. USC transfer Bear Alexander, a former five-star recruit, could be a terror on the D-line if he puts it all together. Oregon looks built to weather the title defense grind.

Familiar Powers Hit Hard By Exits

On the flip side, some big-name programs are scrambling after getting raided in the portal. Washington State has seen a staggering 26 scholarship players enter the portal, including budding star QB John Mateer to Oklahoma and lead back Wayshawn Parker to Utah. Making matters worse, the Cougars also lost head coach Jake Dickert to Wake Forest. The roster and coaching cupboards are frighteningly bare in Pullman.

USC felt the sting of the portal as well, waving goodbye to promising receiver Zachariah Branch and star freshman tight end Duce Robinson to Florida State. Purdue and Arizona have each seen over 25 players enter the portal amid coaching changes. Even Oklahoma got a dose of its own medicine, as QB Jackson Arnold and WR Nic Anderson took their talents elsewhere after the Sooners’ disappointing 6-7 season.

“The portal taketh, and the portal giveth away. You have to take the good with the bad in this era of player movement.”

The Transfer Carousel Keeps Spinning

As the December window closes, the college football world braces for more shakeups in the months ahead. The early transfer portal returns are in, but there are always late surprise entries and flips before the carousel stops.

The teams that restock wisely and integrate their new stars could be holding trophies when the 2025 season wraps. But as we’ve seen, winning the portal is no guarantee of winning on the field. Ultimately, it’s about coaching, chemistry, and capitalizing on those precious second chances.

One thing is for sure — the transfer revolution is only gaining steam. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, because the most exciting twists and turns are surely still to come.
