Jhon Durán’s Red Card Appeal Rejected: 3-Match Ban Upheld

In a blow to Aston Villa’s hopes of climbing the Premier League table, the club has failed in its bid to overturn the red card shown to striker Jhon Durán in their recent 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United. The 21-year-old Colombia international was given his marching orders just 32 minutes into the match at St James’ Park after appearing to stamp on Magpies defender Fabian Schar.

Violent Conduct Charge Upheld

The sending off drew a furious reaction from Villa head coach Unai Emery, who later signaled the club’s intention to appeal the decision. However, the Premier League’s disciplinary panel has now rejected that appeal, meaning Durán must serve a three-match ban for violent conduct.

Costly Absence for Villa’s Attack

Durán’s enforced absence comes at an inopportune time for Villa, who have been relying on the young forward’s pace and goal threat to spearhead their attack. The summer signing from Chicago Fire has quickly become a fan favorite at Villa Park, netting 6 goals in his first 12 appearances for the club.

Jhon has been a revelation for us since arriving in the summer. To lose him for three key matches is a real blow, but we have to accept the decision and find solutions within our squad to compensate for his absence.

Upcoming Matches Durán Will Miss

  • Dec 31: vs Brighton (Premier League)
  • Jan 3: vs Leicester City (Premier League)
  • Jan 10: vs West Ham (FA Cup 3rd Round)

With Durán sidelined, Emery must now decide how best to restructure his forward line for the visit of high-flying Brighton on New Year’s Eve. Brazilian striker Wesley, who has started just 2 league games this season, is the most likely candidate to deputize, though Emery could also opt to deploy wingers Leon Bailey or Bertrand Traoré in more advanced roles.

Disciplinary Record a Growing Concern?

Durán’s red card against Newcastle was his first in English football, but disciplinary issues were a recurring theme during his time in MLS. The fiery Colombian picked up 7 yellow cards in just 22 appearances for Chicago Fire in 2023, raising concerns that his combative style of play could prove problematic in the Premier League.

For now though, Villa’s focus will simply be on navigating the next three games without their star striker. Currently sitting 11th in the table, Emery knows dropped points over this period could see his side losing ground in the race for European qualification. The Spanish coach will be hoping his squad can rally in Durán’s absence to keep their momentum going into the New Year.
