Jared Cannonier Mounts Stunning Comeback TKO in UFC Main Event

In a thrilling UFC middleweight main event, veteran contender Jared Cannonier mounted a stunning comeback to knock out Gregory Rodrigues and potentially save his career. The 40-year-old Cannonier survived a nightmarish first round, getting dropped twice, before rallying to deliver a blistering fourth-round TKO.

The victory snapped a two-fight skid for Cannonier, who entered as the #7 ranked middleweight despite recent losses to top contenders Nassourdine Imavov and Caio Borralho. Meanwhile, it halted a three-fight win streak for the surging Rodrigues in his first UFC main event opportunity.

Rodrigues’ Early Onslaught

Rodrigues came out like a man possessed in round one, pressuring Cannonier with powerful overhand rights. The Brazilian repeatedly cracked the American, flooring him twice and nearly scoring an early finish.

Gregory hits hard as hell and he was slinging some big ass shots. I was able to weather the storm and keep my composure, even in those tough spots.

But the onslaught took a toll on Rodrigues, who noticeably slowed in round two. Cannonier capitalized on his fading opponent, finding a home for his jab and opening a cut under Rodrigues’ left eye.

Cannonier Swings Momentum

Cannonier continued to pour it on in the third frame, hurting Rodrigues with body shots before dropping him with a nasty elbow in the clinch. Ground-and-pound followed but the Brazilian was saved by the bell.

I didn’t hear the bell at the end of the [third] round. I thought I had finished the fight. I got up and looked around and was like, ‘How come no one is as excited as I am?’

Cannonier Closes the Show

Despite his corner’s efforts to rally him, Rodrigues was visibly drained heading into the championship rounds. Just 21 seconds into round four, Cannonier unloaded with a final salvo of head and body shots that sent Rodrigues crashing to the canvas for good.

I guess I was hurt enough to get dropped on my ass a couple times. But [that’s natural].

A New Lease on His Career

The inspiring victory was absolutely crucial for Cannonier, an aging contender who couldn’t afford a third straight setback. By digging deep and delivering a sensational comeback TKO, he proved he’s still a dangerous force at 185 pounds.

Now back in the win column, it will be interesting to see where Cannonier goes from here. He remains a highly-ranked middleweight and with a few more wins, could find himself challenging for UFC gold once again.

As for Rodrigues, this is a tough loss but a valuable learning experience. At just 30 years old, he has plenty of time to rebound and work his way back into contention. But he’ll need to shore up his cardio and defense if he wants to hang with the division’s elite.
