In a devastating blow to the surging Detroit Pistons, third-year guard Jaden Ivey has sustained a broken fibula in his left leg, sources told ESPN on Thursday. The rising star was in the midst of a breakout campaign, averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
Freak Accident Sidelines Ivey
The injury occurred during Wednesday’s matchup against the Orlando Magic when Magic guard Cole Anthony slipped and fell into Ivey’s planted left leg while going for a loose ball. Ivey immediately grabbed at his shin in obvious distress.
The Pistons’ medical staff quickly attended to the 22-year-old, holding up towels to block the crowd’s view as players from both teams formed a circle around their fallen colleague. After a lengthy delay, Ivey was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled out of the arena.
It was tough, man. I didn’t see the whole play, but just seeing him down like that in pain was difficult. It hurts just to see injuries happen like that.
– Pistons forward Marvin Bagley III
Rising Star Sidelined
The 5th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Purdue, Ivey had been enjoying a stellar third season as one of the cornerstones of Detroit’s youth movement. He recently set new career highs with 31 points and 13 assists in a win over the Jazz on December 20th.
Now, the electric playmaker faces an extended absence as he recovers from this unfortunate injury. While an exact timetable has yet to be determined, a broken fibula typically sidelines players for 6-to-8 weeks at minimum.
Playoff Hopes Threatened?
The upstart Pistons currently sit at 18-15, good for 6th in the East. They’ve been one of the NBA’s pleasant surprises behind the play of Ivey and fellow young core pieces like Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren. But Ivey’s injury threatens to derail their promising campaign.
- Before Ivey’s injury, the Pistons had gone 8-2 in their last 10 games
- Detroit’s 111.8 offensive rating drops to 103.4 when Ivey is off the court
Veteran Cory Joseph and second-year guard Jaden Hardy figure to see expanded roles in Ivey’s absence. But there’s no replacing the athleticism, shot creation and infectious energy the budding star brings to this ascending squad.
It’s a tough loss, no doubt about it. Jaden means so much to our team, on and off the court. But we’re a resilient group and we’ll find a way to hold it down until he’s back doing what he does.
– Pistons head coach Dwayne Casey
The Road Ahead
The Pistons will now face a challenging stretch without their offensive engine and emotional leader. Over the next month, notable matchups include:
- January 6 at Philadelphia
- January 10 vs Boston
- January 15 at Denver
- January 23 at Milwaukee
- January 28 vs Brooklyn
If Detroit can weather this storm and remain in the playoff picture until Ivey returns, it will only further validate this group’s grit, depth and upward trajectory. But make no mistake – the dynamic 22-year-old is the catalyst that makes the Pistons go.
Update: Pistons guard Jaden Ivey has suffered a broken fibula in his left leg, sources tell ESPN. The emerging star is out indefinitely.

As Ivey begins the arduous rehab process, the Pistons and their fans can only hope this is a temporary speed bump and not a major roadblock in the franchise’s promising revival. The high-flying guard’s explosive game is tailor-made for postseason heroics – if his team can get there without him.
