Israel & Hamas Reach Deal to Allow Palestinians Back to Northern Gaza

In a significant development, mediator Qatar has announced a deal between Israel and Hamas to allow Palestinians to return to northern Gaza starting Monday. The agreement, confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, also secures the release of Israeli civilian hostage Arbel Yehoud by Thursday.

The breakthrough comes as the first major test of the tenuous ceasefire brokered last week, following Hamas’ surprise attack last October that killed over 1,200 Israelis and sparked a devastating 15-month war. While Israel began pulling back from parts of Gaza under the truce, it had delayed letting residents return to the north pending Yehoud’s release.

Phased Prisoner & Hostage Exchanges

The Qatar-brokered deal expands upon the ceasefire’s terms for a gradual exchange of hostages and prisoners over the next six weeks:

  • By Thursday: Hamas to free Yehoud and 2 other Israeli hostages
  • By next Saturday: 3 more hostages to be released by Hamas
  • Over 6 weeks: Israel to free nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in phases
  • Still captive: About 90 Israelis remain hostages in Gaza as of now

Hamas also provided Israel with required information on all remaining hostages, a key Israeli demand. Still, mistrust runs deep, with each side accusing the other of already violating the ceasefire.

Tensions Flare as Frustrations Mount

The delays have exacted a heavy toll, with thousands of displaced Palestinians waiting in limbo to go home to rubble-strewn northern Gaza. Tempers flared overnight as Israeli forces fired on crowds trying to cross through the Netzarim corridor, killing 2 and wounding 9.

“We have been in agony for a year and a half… The fate of more than a million people is linked to one person [Yehoud]. See how valuable we are? We are worthless.”

– Fadi al-Sinwar, displaced resident of Gaza City

Staggering Human Cost of Conflict

The sheer scale of destruction and loss of life in the 15-month war underscores the urgency of cementing the fragile peace:

  • 47,000+ Palestinians killed, over half women & children per Gaza officials
  • 17,000+ combatants killed by Israel (IDF claim, evidence pending)
  • 90% of Gazans displaced, with many returning to rubble & ruin

For bereaved Israeli families, freeing the remaining hostages is paramount. “Any resumption of fighting is a death sentence for the hostages,” warned Itzik Horn, father of captive soldiers Iair and Eitan Horn.

Navigating a Precarious Path to Peace

As Gazans begin piecing together their shattered lives and Israelis pray for their loved ones’ safe return, all eyes are on the nascent ceasefire deal. With acrimony and suspicion still running high, even small missteps could easily plunge the region back into full-blown conflict.

Brokering the next phase will prove even thornier, as Hamas insists on a complete end to the war in exchange for freeing all remaining hostages – a price Israel seems unwilling to pay without fully neutralizing the militant group first.

For now, a wary region holds its breath – will this pivotal deal hold long enough to pave a path to lasting peace? With so many lives in the balance, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Every gesture of goodwill, every hostage released and family reunited, offers a glimmer of hope that a different future is possible – if both sides find the courage to stay the course.
