Hurricanes Place Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere On Injured Reserve

The Carolina Hurricanes received unfortunate news on the injury front Sunday, as the team announced veteran defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been placed on injured reserve. The move comes after Gostisbehere suffered an upper-body injury in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on December 27th.

Gostisbehere, 31, had been enjoying a productive season on the Hurricanes’ blueline prior to the injury. Through 35 games, he had recorded 6 goals and 21 assists for 27 points while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per night. His puck-moving skills and offensive contributions will certainly be missed during his absence.

Hurricanes Recall Juha Jaaska From AHL

To fill the open roster spot, Carolina has recalled forward Juha Jaaska from their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. The 26-year-old winger made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes earlier this season, appearing in one game. He has posted solid numbers in the AHL, with 7 goals and 9 assists through 26 contests.

Gostisbehere is a key part of our defense corps and power play. It’s tough to lose him, but we have confidence in our depth to step up in his absence.

– Hurricanes Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour

Gostisbehere’s Impressive NHL Career

Over his 11-year NHL career, Shayne Gostisbehere has established himself as a skilled offensive defenseman. He has tallied 394 points (103 goals, 291 assists) in 654 career regular season games with the Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings, and Hurricanes.

  • Calder Trophy runner-up in 2015-16
  • Philadelphia Flyers single-season assists record for defensemen (52 in 2017-18)

The Hurricanes have not provided a specific timeline for Gostisbehere’s return, but losing the veteran rearguard for any extended period is certainly a blow to their defensive depth. Look for the Canes to lean more heavily on the likes of Brent Burns, Jaccob Slavin, and Brady Skjei to shoulder increased responsibilities until “Ghost” is able to rejoin the lineup.

Carolina (24-9-7) currently sits atop the Metropolitan Division standings and will look to maintain that position when they host the Penguins on Sunday. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00pm ET at PNC Arena.
