In a major move to secure their young core, the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed All-Star shortstop Geraldo Perdomo to a four-year, $45 million contract extension. The deal, which includes a club option for 2030, keeps the 25-year-old Perdomo in Arizona through at least his age-30 season. It’s a significant investment by the Diamondbacks in a player who has quickly become a key piece of their roster.
Perdomo’s Path to Stardom
Signed by the Diamondbacks for just $70,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2016, Perdomo has undergone a remarkable transformation. After a rough rookie season in which he hit just .195, he rebounded in a big way in 2023:
- Named an All-Star for the first time
- Hit .273 with a .718 OPS in 98 games
- Provided excellent defense at shortstop
- Helped lead the D-backs to the NL pennant
Perdomo’s breakout was a major reason Arizona made it all the way to the World Series before falling to the AL champion. Now, with this extension, they’re banking on him to be a cornerstone of their infield for years to come.
Contract Details
The specifics of Perdomo’s new deal:
- 4 years, $45 million guaranteed (2026-2029)
- $5M signing bonus in 2025
- Annual salaries: $5M in 2026, $8M in 2027, $11M in 2028, $13M in 2029
- $15M club option for 2030 with $3M buyout
It’s a significant raise for Perdomo, who was set to make just $2.55M in 2025 before reaching arbitration. The deal buys out his three arbitration years plus at least one free agent year, with the potential for a second if his option is picked up.
Arizona’s Window to Win
With Perdomo locked up long-term, the Diamondbacks now have an impressive group of players under club control for the next several seasons:
Player | Position | Signed Through |
Corbin Carroll | OF | 2031 |
Corbin Burnes | SP | 2030 |
Geraldo Perdomo | SS | 2030* |
Ketel Marte | 2B | 2028 |
Eduardo Rodriguez | SP | 2028 |
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. | OF | 2027 |
*2030 option
Add in the club’s top prospect Jordan Lawlar, who also plays shortstop, and several other promising young players like Gabriel Moreno, Brandon Pfaadt, Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas, and the Diamondbacks look poised to contend in the NL West for the foreseeable future. Their main competition remains the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, whom they swept out of the playoffs last year on their way to the pennant.
“[The Perdomo extension] deepens Arizona’s already strong core,” said ESPN’s Jeff Passan. “The Diamondbacks are widely regarded as the second-best team in the competitive NL West behind the Dodgers.”
The Diamondbacks still have some big decisions to make with several key players hitting free agency after this season, including ace Zac Gallen and All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor. But the Perdomo deal ensures they’ll have a dynamic player anchoring the middle of their diamond as they aim to build on last year’s World Series run. At just 25, his best days may still be ahead of him.
