Fantasy football managers, take a deep breath. Week 12 is upon us, and with it comes a whirlwind of tough lineup decisions. But don’t overthink it – we’re here to guide you through the dos and don’ts that could make or break your matchup. From the murky waters of the 49ers receiving corps to the roller coaster ride that is Anthony Richardson, let’s dive in and separate the must-starts from the bench-warmers.
Don’t Assume Deebo is the 49ers’ WR1
Deebo Samuel, the fantasy darling of 2021, has been a shadow of his former self this season. Hampered by injuries and a shifting offensive dynamic, Samuel has reached 13 PPR points just once in his last seven games. Meanwhile, emerging talent Jauan Jennings has exploded onto the scene, commanding 11 targets in each of the past two weeks and racking up 184 yards and a score. With a healthy George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey also in the mix, Samuel’s role is far from certain. Don’t just plug him in based on name recognition alone.
Jennings looks like the 49ers WR to own right now. He has 88 or more receiving yards in half his games this season. That’s no fluke.
Do Snag Adam Thielen If Available
Thielen, set to return from a lengthy hamstring injury, may not see a featured role right away in Carolina. But even a modest target share could yield more production than former teammate Diontae Johnson is seeing in Baltimore. Since joining the Ravens, Johnson has one catch on a meager four targets. With the Panthers’ schedule softening after a tough Chiefs matchup, Thielen is worth an add as a potential WR4/5 with upside. The same can’t be said for the forgotten man in Baltimore.
Don’t Trust Anthony Richardson…Yet
The rollercoaster ride continues for the talented but raw Richardson. After a promising showing against the lowly Jets, it’s tempting to fire up the Colts’ second-year signal-caller. But the Lions’ defense is a different animal, ranking among the stingiest in points allowed to QBs. Richardson showed flashes with his legs and some downfield throws, but his accuracy and decision-making remain works in progress. If you’re chasing upside, he’s in the QB2 mix, but don’t bench a stalwart for him until we see more consistency.
Do Cut Bait on Idle Kickers
With byes stretching into Week 14, you may be tempted to hold a stud kicker like Justin Tucker through his vacation. Don’t do it. Kicker scoring is notoriously fickle, and even the elite ones are no exception. Tucker, after a recent bout of struggles, is outside the top 12 in PPG. That bench spot is better utilized on a high-upside flex or quarterback streamer. Sentimentality has no place in the cut-throat world of fantasy.
Stop keeping bye-week kickers around. Use that bench spot on someone who could actually help you win in the coming weeks.
As the fantasy playoffs loom, every lineup decision carries immense weight. But don’t let the pressure cloud your judgment. Trust the data, stay abreast of the latest news and trends, and make the choices that give you the best chance to win. Whether you’re vying for a first-round bye or scratching and clawing for a spot in the dance, stay focused, stay flexible, and most of all, enjoy the ride. The fantasy rollercoaster is nearing its apex – make sure you’re strapped in tight. Good luck in Week 12 and beyond!
