Dricus Du Plessis Defends Middleweight Title at UFC 312

UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis put on a stellar performance in the main event of UFC 312, defeating challenger Sean Strickland for the second time in just over a year to retain his title. The South African fighter dominated the rematch from start to finish, earning a lopsided unanimous decision victory with scores of 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46.

Du Plessis showcased his superior striking and grappling skills throughout the five-round contest. He repeatedly landed heavy punches on Strickland, breaking the challenger’s nose early in the fight. On the ground, Du Plessis controlled position and threatened with submissions. Strickland had no answer for the champion’s diverse attack.

Zhang Defends Title Against Suarez

In the co-main event, Zhang Weili retained her women’s strawweight title with a unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Tatiana Suarez. Scores were 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 for the champion.

Zhang’s striking and cardio proved to be the difference over five hard-fought rounds. Suarez, fighting for just the fourth time since 2019 due to injury, had success with her wrestling but faded late. Zhang picked apart Suarez on the feet in the championship rounds to solidify her victory.

What’s Next For The Champions?

After turning back tough challenges at UFC 312, both Du Plessis and Zhang appear to have exciting options for their next title defenses:

  • Khamzat Chimaev could be Du Plessis’ next challenger after winning a top contender bout
  • Zhang may move up to flyweight to pursue a second title

There’s a lot of intriguing matchups out there for me. I’m ready to keep defending my belt against the best contenders the UFC has to offer.
