Controversy continues to follow Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev, as the world No. 5 has been slapped with fines totaling over US$76,000 for two separate incidents at the 2025 Australian Open. The hefty penalties, handed down by tournament officials, stem from Medvedev repeatedly smashing his racket against a net camera during his first-round win and displaying inappropriate behavior in his second-round loss.
Racket Abuse Incident
In his opening match against Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev let his frustrations boil over, slamming his racket into the net in a fit of rage. The outburst damaged a small camera attached to the net, drawing the ire of officials. For this transgression, the Russian was fined US$10,000.
Medvedev later joked about the incident, expressing surprise at the camera’s resilience compared to his racket:
The camera was very, very strong, because my racket didn’t handle the damage, but the camera did. I was very surprised.

Second-Round Meltdown
However, it was Medvedev’s actions during his shock second-round defeat to American qualifier Learner Tien that resulted in the heftier US$66,000 fine. Throughout the match, the Russian repeatedly voiced his displeasure with umpiring calls and, at one point, flung his racket across the court towards the advertising boards.
Compounding matters, Medvedev failed to attend the mandatory post-match press conference, further violating tournament rules. The fine for his second-round antics amounted to more than half of his US$124,000 prize money for reaching that stage of the competition.
A Pattern of Behavior
This is not the first time Medvedev has found himself in hot water for his on-court conduct. The Russian has developed a reputation for his fiery temper and confrontational demeanor, often clashing with officials, opponents, and even spectators.
- In 2020, he was fined for verbal abuse towards an umpire at the U.S. Open
- He faced boos from the crowd and criticism for his comments at the 2021 Australian Open
Despite his undeniable talent, Medvedev’s inability to control his emotions has often overshadowed his performances on the court. As he continues to rack up fines and make headlines for the wrong reasons, questions arise about the impact on his reputation and marketability.
The Need for Change
As one of the sport’s top players, Medvedev has a responsibility to uphold the integrity and sportsmanship of tennis. His repeated outbursts and disregard for the rules not only tarnish his own image but also set a poor example for aspiring players.
It is crucial for Medvedev to address his on-court behavior and find ways to channel his passion more constructively. Working with a sports psychologist or anger management specialist could help him develop coping mechanisms to better handle the pressures of elite competition.
Medvedev is an incredible talent, but his emotions often get the best of him. He needs to find a way to harness that fire without letting it consume him and his performances.

Moving Forward
As the tennis world watches, it remains to be seen whether these latest fines will serve as a wake-up call for Daniil Medvedev. Will he take the necessary steps to rein in his temper and focus on letting his racket do the talking? Or will he continue down a path of self-destruction, alienating fans and damaging his legacy?
The ball is in Medvedev’s court, and it is up to him to decide how he wants to be remembered – as a champion who conquered his demons or as a cautionary tale of wasted potential. For the sake of his career and the sport he loves, one can only hope he makes the right choice.
