Cowboys Cut Ezekiel Elliott to Open Playoff Door

In a stunning twist to cap off the 2024 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys have once again released veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott. But this time, the move comes with a unique purpose – giving the former All-Pro a chance to latch on with a playoff contender for the final week and postseason.

The Cowboys initially parted ways with Elliott after the 2022 campaign in a cost-cutting move. He spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots before returning to Dallas on a one-year, incentive-laden deal this past offseason. However, Zeke struggled to regain his peak form, tallying just 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns through 16 games.

A Respectful Release

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones framed the decision as a gesture of gratitude and respect for Elliott’s contributions to the franchise.

Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today.

Despite his diminished production in recent years, Elliott departs as the Cowboys’ third all-time leading rusher. His 8,262 rushing yards from 2016-2022 trail only NFL legends Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett in the Dallas record books.

Changing of the Guard

As Elliott moves on, the Cowboys will lean on ascending second-year back Rico Dowdle as their featured runner. The undrafted free agent sensation has emerged as a breakout star, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark last week. Rookie speedster Deuce Vaughn will serve as the change-of-pace complement, with veteran Dalvin Cook providing depth.

Chasing a Ring

For Elliott, this release presents a unique late-season opportunity. If he clears waivers, the veteran will be free to sign with any playoff-bound team in need of backfield reinforcements. Contenders dealing with injuries or seeking a battle-tested power back for the postseason could come calling.

While no specific suitors have emerged, one could envision Elliott providing a boost for teams like the Bills, Chiefs, or 49ers as they gear up for a Super Bowl push. The prospect of claiming a long-elusive championship in the twilight of his career is sure to motivate the proud veteran.

End of an Era

Regardless of where he lands, Elliott’s second Dallas departure marks the end of a memorable era. The former fourth overall pick was the heartbeat of the Cowboys offense for half a decade, earning three Pro Bowl nods and pacing the NFL in rushing twice.

From his signature “feed me” celebration to punishing runs that wore down defenses, Zeke established himself as a fan favorite and locker room leader. Even as his effectiveness waned, Elliott’s relentless effort and selfless team-first attitude never wavered.

Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever.

– Jerry Jones

As one chapter closes, another begins. With a chance to contribute to a championship contender and add a storybook finish to his distinguished career, Ezekiel Elliott may yet have an opportunity to ride off into the sunset – just not with the Cowboys star on his helmet.
