Can the Buccaneers Surge with the NFL’s Easiest Remaining Schedule?

In the midst of a disappointing season marked by heartbreaking losses, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers find themselves at a crossroads. At 4-6, their playoff aspirations appear to be fading fast. However, a glimmer of hope remains: according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, the Bucs have the easiest remaining schedule in the NFL. Could this favorable slate of games be the catalyst for a remarkable late-season turnaround?

A Season of Missed Opportunities

The Buccaneers’ 2024 campaign has been defined by close calls and missed chances. In Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay had the ball at the 5-yard line with a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. But a costly tackle for loss and an incomplete pass forced them to settle for a game-tying field goal. The 49ers would go on to win with a field goal of their own as time expired.

This script has become all too familiar for the Bucs, who have suffered three losses this season when tied or leading in the final 15 seconds. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, playing the best football of his career, lamented the team’s inability to close out games:

“It feels s—ty. It’s in our hands. As a defensive captain of this football team, I’m out there — I’m not doing enough, everybody’s not doing enough. So whatever it is, we gotta dig deep and find it…whatever it is, we gotta fix it asap.”

– Lavonte David, Buccaneers linebacker and team captain

Reasons for Optimism

Despite their struggles, there are several factors working in Tampa Bay’s favor as they enter the home stretch:

  • The return of key players: Wide receiver Mike Evans and cornerback Jamel Dean are expected to be back after the Week 11 bye, providing a boost on both sides of the ball.
  • Rachaad White’s emergence: The rookie running back has been a bright spot, showcasing his talent and work ethic. His continued development could add a new dimension to the offense.
  • Mayfield’s resurgence: In his first season with the Bucs, Mayfield is playing the best statistical football of his career. His leadership and playmaking ability will be crucial down the stretch.

Perhaps most importantly, Tampa Bay’s remaining opponents have a combined winning percentage of just .362. On paper, this sets the stage for a potential Buccaneer resurgence.

The Road Ahead

Head coach Todd Bowles remains confident in his team’s ability to turn things around, emphasizing the need to eliminate costly mistakes and finish games strong:

“[We] have to finish ballgames. [When] guys get a chance to play, they have to come in, play and execute. We can’t play hard and then not play smart at the end. We have to play smarter football.”

– Todd Bowles, Buccaneers head coach

The Buccaneers’ quest for redemption begins in Week 12 against the 2-8 New York Giants. From there, they’ll face a gauntlet of sub-.500 teams, with their only remaining opponent boasting a winning record being the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers. If Tampa Bay can clean up their late-game execution and capitalize on their favorable schedule, a playoff berth is not out of the question.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. The Buccaneers will need to prove they can win consistently and perform in clutch situations. But with a softer schedule, a healthier roster, and a renewed sense of urgency, Tampa Bay has the ingredients to cook up a surprising second-half surge. The next chapter in their season begins now.
