The San Francisco 49ers’ hopes for a deep playoff run have taken another blow as quarterback Brock Purdy deals with right shoulder soreness following a disappointing loss to the Seattle Seahawks. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, Purdy’s status is currently “day-to-day,” adding to the team’s already extensive injury list.
Purdy’s Promising Start Derailed by Injury
Since taking over as the starting quarterback late in the season, Brock Purdy has shown flashes of brilliance, leading the 49ers to several key victories. However, his meteoric rise may be temporarily halted by this shoulder issue, which Shanahan believes is the result of the hits Purdy took during the Seahawks game.
“He’s day-to-day,” Shanahan said of Purdy’s status. The coach added that while he wasn’t sure if there was a specific play that caused the injury, the soreness is likely a cumulative effect of the hits Purdy endured throughout the game.
Offense Struggles in Seattle
The 49ers’ offense failed to find its rhythm against the Seahawks, with Purdy completing 21 of 28 passes for a modest 159 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The rookie quarterback also rushed for 40 yards and a score, but the hits he took along the way may have contributed to his current shoulder woes.
“I think they just did a good job with taking away our opportunities to go deep,” Purdy said of the Seahawks’ defense. “They kept everything in front of them.”
Bosa’s Status Also in Question
Purdy isn’t the only key 49er whose status is uncertain for the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers. Defensive end Nick Bosa, who has been dealing with a hip and oblique issue, suffered a similar injury on the opposite side of his body during the Seahawks game.
“We’ll see how it goes this week,” Shanahan said of Bosa’s availability. “[There’s] just as good of a chance for him not to play as play.”
The 49ers’ defense was noticeably more effective with Bosa on the field, allowing just 3.3 yards per play and no touchdowns while recording three sacks. Without the star defensive end, those numbers jumped to 6.1 yards per play, two touchdowns, and only one sack.
Other Injury Concerns
In addition to Purdy and Bosa, the 49ers are monitoring the health of several other key players. Tight end George Kittle (hamstring), left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), and cornerback Charvarius Ward (personal reasons) are all on the team’s radar as they prepare for the crucial matchup against the Packers.
“I know [Williams] is sore today,” Shanahan said. “I know he battled to play in that game and really appreciated him getting through it and out there, and we’ll see how he recovers here going into Wednesday.”
As the 49ers navigate this wave of injuries, their depth and resilience will be put to the test. With the playoffs on the horizon, the team will need to find ways to overcome these setbacks and maintain their focus on the ultimate goal: a Super Bowl championship.
For now, all eyes will be on the practice field as Purdy, Bosa, and the rest of the walking wounded work to get back to full strength. The 49ers’ faithful will be holding their collective breath, hoping that their team can weather this storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
