The winds of change are blowing fiercely through the halls of Borussia Dortmund. In a shocking turn of events, the club sacked manager Nuri Şahin on Wednesday, just over a year after he took the reins from Edin Terzić. The decision comes amidst a disastrous run of form that has left Dortmund languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga, a staggering 20 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.
Şahin’s dismissal, while perhaps inevitable given the team’s recent results, raises deeper questions about the state of the club. The former Dortmund midfielder was brought in to instill a new identity and style of play, but instead, the team has regressed even further from their days under Terzić.
A Season of Woe
Dortmund’s woes extend beyond their domestic struggles. The club currently sits 13th in the UEFA Champions League league phase following a 2-1 loss to Bologna on Tuesday. This comes on the heels of four consecutive Bundesliga defeats against Bayer Leverkusen, Holstein Kiel and Eintracht Frankfurt.
After four losses in a row, with only one win in the past nine games and being 10th in the Bundesliga standings, we have unfortunately lost faith that we can achieve our goals with the current setup.

Inexperience or Deeper Issues?
While Şahin’s managerial inexperience may have contributed to Dortmund’s downfall, sources within the club suggest the problems run much deeper. The squad has undergone minimal refreshing in recent years despite losing stars like Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels.
- Lack of squad overhaul and refreshing
- Losing key players without adequate replacements
- Questions over scouting and recruitment
Apart from a few bright spots like Jamie Gittens and Felix Nmecha, Dortmund’s expensively assembled squad has largely failed to impress this season. Leadership figures like Emre Can and Julian Brandt have been inconsistent at best.
What Next for Dortmund?
As the search begins for Şahin’s successor, names like Niko Kovač, Urs Fischer and Roger Schmidt have emerged as potential candidates. Kovač appears to be the frontrunner, with reports suggesting he could be brought in on a short-term deal to provide a mental and physical reset for the underperforming squad.
However, Dortmund’s issues clearly extend beyond the manager. Until the club commits to a major squad overhaul and a re-evaluation of their recruitment strategy, they may continue to stagnate in mediocrity. The next managerial appointment will be crucial, but it will take more than a new face in the dugout to steer this meandering Dortmund ship back on course.
