The Indiana Fever’s newly appointed head coach, Stephanie White, couldn’t contain her enthusiasm as she discussed the opportunity to work with the team’s young stars, Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. In a press conference on Monday, the Indiana native expressed her belief that the duo has the potential to become one of the greatest point guard-center combinations in the history of basketball.
Building Blocks for the Future
White, who previously coached the Fever from 2015-2016 and most recently served as an assistant with the Connecticut Sun, sees Clark and Boston as the cornerstone pieces for the Fever’s future success. “You’ve got the point guard and the center … you have the bookends that you want to build around,” she remarked, adding:
These two are the best. There’s so many things they do well right now. And you saw the difference between the beginning of the season to the end of the season, and how much better they got with one another.
Elevating the Game
The coach’s praise for her young stars didn’t stop there. White boldly predicted that Clark and Boston would go down as the greatest point guard and post player not only in WNBA history but in the entire sport of basketball. It’s a lofty claim, but one that speaks to the immense potential she sees in the duo.
For their part, Clark and Boston seem equally excited about the chance to work with White. The reigning Rookie of the Year winners attended the press conference and shared their thoughts on their new coach. Clark noted White’s reputation as an Indiana basketball legend and praised her scouting abilities, while Boston expressed enthusiasm about White’s commitment to investing in her players’ development.
A Homecoming and a Vision
White, who starred at Purdue before her WNBA career, called the opportunity to return to her home state and coach the Fever a chance to reconnect with her “DNA.” She previously served as an assistant when the Fever won their lone title in 2012 and now hopes to guide the franchise back to championship contention.
While acknowledging that the team still has room for growth, particularly on defense, White seems confident that the pieces are in place for the Fever to take a leap forward. With Clark and Boston as the catalysts and a renewed sense of excitement surrounding the franchise, the future indeed looks bright in Indiana.
As White summed it up: “The future is so bright. Our ultimate goal is to hang another banner in the Fieldhouse.” If her vision comes to fruition, Fever fans may soon have reason to celebrate once again.
