Patriots’ Pass Rusher Joshua Uche Potential Trade Deadline Target

As the NFL trade deadline draws near, a surprising name has emerged as a potential target for teams looking to bolster their pass rush: New England Patriots linebacker Joshua Uche. According to league sources, multiple clubs have inquired about the 26-year-old’s availability, intrigued by his tantalizing potential and modest salary.

Uche, a second-round pick out of Michigan in 2020, is coming off a breakout 2022 campaign in which he recorded 11.5 sacks and established himself as a rising star in the Patriots’ defense. However, with New England stumbling to a 1-6 start this season, the franchise may be willing to part with young talent like Uche in exchange for future draft capital as they look to retool.

Uche Addresses Trade Rumors

Speaking to reporters this week, Uche acknowledged the swirling trade speculation but maintained his focus on helping the Patriots turn their season around.

“Ultimately, I am an employee of the Patriots and if they think it’s in their best interest to trade me, I know they’ll do so. If there is an opportunity for them to build for the future, I know they’re going to do so. At this point in time, there are a lot of rumors, and a lot of information that [media] have access to before I do. So we’ll see which one of those pieces of information come to materialize, but I know one thing for sure: Wherever I’m at, I’m going to play some damn good football.”

Betting on Himself

Uche re-signed with the Patriots this offseason on a one-year, $3 million contract, turning down more lucrative offers elsewhere. The young pass rusher saw it as an opportunity to prove his commitment to the organization that drafted him and continue his development in a familiar system.

“Taking the one-year deal, a team-friendly deal with different offers on the table, I felt like I wanted to speak to the organization — to Coach Mayo, Mr. Kraft, to [Eliot] Wolf — that ‘I am trying my best to make it work here.’ Which is why I am currently playing on this deal, as much as I feel like I am worth more than this deal.”

Despite his affinity for the Patriots, Uche recognizes the business side of the NFL and the importance of maximizing his value while in his prime.

“Now while being here, I can’t be oblivious to certain things of where I fit within the puzzle and the future of the team. So it’s something now where I’m open to trying to maximize my capabilities — being only 26 years old, healthy, and I still feel like I have a lot to give the game. I want to be able to put myself in the best position to get the most juice out of this game, to get the most juice out of myself before I hang up the cleats.”

Making the Most of His Opportunities

Through seven games this season, Uche has played just 35% of the Patriots’ defensive snaps, primarily as a situational pass rusher. While he’s tallied 13 tackles and 2 sacks, the 2022 breakout star believes he has much more to offer if given the chance to showcase his skills in an expanded role.

“There is a role they put me in here — I’m a pass rusher, right? — and it’s hard to get into those situations where I can thrive if everything is not clicking together to create those opportunities. I’ve done the best I can within the given opportunities, and I’m going to continue to do my best within my given opportunities. I know that if I can somehow get into a situation where those things all come together, I want to see what I’m capable of doing. I know we saw a glimpse of it in 2022. And I just know I’m that player. I have a lot more to give, man. I have a lot more to give.”

What’s Next for Uche and the Patriots?

As the November 5th trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Patriots to see if they opt to cash in on Uche’s value or retain the promising pass rusher in hopes of a second-half turnaround. Should New England decide to move on from Uche, expect a robust market for his services, with contending teams eager to add a cost-controlled, high-upside defender to their ranks.

For Uche, the coming days will be a time of uncertainty and reflection as he awaits word on his future. But regardless of where he lands, the young linebacker remains confident in his abilities and determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.

“I know that if I can somehow get into a situation where those things all come together, I want to see what I’m capable of doing. I know we saw a glimpse of it in 2022. And I just know I’m that player. I have a lot more to give, man. I have a lot more to give.”
