Makhachev Dominates Moicano in UFC 311 Title Defense

Islam Makhachev continues to reign supreme over the UFC lightweight division. The Dagestani champion made quick work of short-notice challenger Renato Moicano, securing a first-round submission to retain his title in the UFC 311 main event at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.

Makhachev found himself in a familiar position when original opponent Arman Tsarukyan withdrew due to a back injury suffered during his weight cut. Brazilian veteran Moicano stepped up on just one day’s notice for the unexpected title shot, but oddsmakers gave him little chance against the pound-for-pound king.

Makhachev Overcomes Early Scare

Despite being a massive betting favorite, Makhachev faced some early adversity when Moicano connected with a solid right hand that briefly dropped the champion. But Makhachev quickly recovered, taking Moicano to the mat and deftly maneuvering into position to lock in a tight D’Arce choke.

With nowhere to go and no option but to submit, Moicano tapped out at the 4:05 mark of Round 1. The impressive victory pushed Makhachev’s win streak to 15 fights, tying Kamaru Usman for the longest in UFC history.

Lightweight Records Fall

By notching his fifth successful title defense, Makhachev now holds the UFC lightweight record, surpassing the four title fight wins by Benson Henderson, BJ Penn, and his coach Khabib Nurmagomedov. At 819 days, Makhachev’s current reign is second only to Nurmagomedov’s 1,077 days as lightweight champion.

I am here to stay. I am the champion and I will keep defending my belt against whoever they put in front of me.

Moicano’s Valiant Effort Falls Short

For Moicano, it was a case of history repeating itself. The 33-year-old also stepped in on short notice to face Rafael dos Anjos in a 160-pound catchweight bout in 2022, suffering a submission loss. Despite the defeat, Moicano earned respect for his willingness to face the world’s best on minimal preparation.

What’s Next for the Lightweight King?

Following another dominant title defense, attention now turns to who can possibly challenge Makhachev’s reign. With the champion having already defeated most top contenders, options appear limited. But as Makhachev’s idol Nurmagomedov often said, the challenge is what motivates true champions to keep pushing forward.

One thing is certain – Islam Makhachev has cemented his status as the UFC’s preeminent lightweight. And with an ever-growing highlight reel of masterful performances, he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. The division’s elite will keep gunning for the Dagestani king, but dethroning him looks to be a monumental task for even the most talented challengers.
