The New York Mets have bolstered their outfield depth for the 2025 season, agreeing to terms with veteran Jesse Winker on a one-year contract. The deal, which is pending a physical, will bring the 31-year-old back to Queens after he finished the 2024 campaign with the Mets following a midseason trade from the Washington Nationals.
Winker, a former All-Star with the Cincinnati Reds, has proven to be a valuable left-handed bat throughout his career. Known for his patient approach and ability to get on base, he posted a solid .257/.374/.419 slash line with 11 home runs in 96 games for the Nationals in 2024 before being dealt to the Mets at the trade deadline.
A Perfect Fit for the Mets
With the Mets’ outfield largely set heading into 2025, Winker profiles as an ideal complement to the team’s existing pieces. His left-handed stroke should play well in the cozy confines of Citi Field, and his ability to work counts and get on base at a high clip will help lengthen an already potent Mets lineup.
Though he may not be an everyday starter with Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo locked into the corner outfield spots, Winker figures to see plenty of action as the team’s primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching. His professional approach at the plate and veteran presence should also provide a boost to the clubhouse.
Defensive Limitations Not a Concern
While Winker’s defensive shortcomings have been well-documented, his fit with the Mets minimizes those concerns. With the DH spot available and strong defenders like Soto, Nimmo, and Starling Marte patrolling the outfield, the team can deploy Winker in a role that maximizes his offensive contributions while limiting his exposure in the field.
“We’re excited to bring Jesse back into the fold,” said Mets general manager Billy Eppler. “His left-handed bat, professional approach, and veteran leadership will be valuable assets as we look to build upon our success from last season.”
Bolstering an Already Dangerous Lineup
With Winker now in the mix, the Mets boast one of the deepest and most formidable lineups in the National League. His presence will help balance the batting order and give opposing pitchers yet another tough out to navigate.
- Provides a high on-base threat from the left side
- Lengthens the lineup and wears down opposing pitchers
- Brings valuable experience and leadership to the clubhouse
As the Mets look to make another deep postseason run in 2025, the addition of Jesse Winker may prove to be an underrated but critical move. His bat and veteran savvy should help elevate an already talented roster as they set their sights on bringing a World Series championship back to Queens.
