Jordan Spieth Poised for Pebble Beach Return After Successful Wrist Surgery

Golf fans rejoice – Jordan Spieth is ready to tee it up once again. After a frustrating five-month absence to recover from wrist surgery, the 31-year-old star has declared himself pain-free and eager to compete at the upcoming AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. It’s the longest Spieth has gone between tournament rounds in his illustrious career.

Spieth Undergoes Wrist Surgery, Resets Swing

Spieth first noticed issues with his wrist back in 2018, but the injury reached a tipping point in May 2023 when the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon began popping out of its sheath. In August, he underwent surgery to rebuild the sheath, sidelining him for 12 weeks before he could even hit balls again.

The extended break allowed Spieth to hit the reset button on some long-standing bad habits in his swing. “I’m not calling this swing changes,” Spieth clarified. “These are just a reset into some of the stuff I did that was my DNA, that was super advantageous that I had gotten away from for one reason or another.”

Pebble Beach Return Marks New Beginning

Spieth contemplated playing in the California desert but ultimately circled Pebble Beach for his much-anticipated return. It’s a fitting choice, as the event coincides with AT&T’s 40th year as title sponsor – currently the longest-running sponsorship deal on the PGA Tour. Spieth has had a corporate partnership with AT&T since 2014.

While he knows it will take time to regain his elite form, Spieth has his sights set on adding to his major championship tally. Completing the career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship and capturing The Players are two of his biggest goals. “I feel like you’ve conquered golf if you’ve won all five,” Spieth said.

“I think the biggest goals for me, I want to feel like I step on the tee and I know I’m one of the best golfers in the world — I have no doubts about that when I step on the tee. I want things to be in place where I feel consistent enough to believe that day in and day out.”

Can Spieth Recapture the Magic?

Few can forget Spieth’s meteoric rise in 2015, when at age 22 he captured the Masters and U.S. Open en route to reaching world No. 1. But in recent years, nagging injuries and inconsistent play have seen him slip to 70th in the rankings.

Still, the 13-time PGA Tour winner remains one of the game’s biggest draws. He ranked 5th in the Player Impact Program last year despite contending only once all season. With his wrist repaired and renewed motivation, Spieth is determined to reestablish himself among golf’s elite.
