The presence of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine has been a development shrouded in both secrecy and speculation. However, according to a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military intelligence service (GUR), their impact on the nearly three-year war has been limited so far.
“The involvement of the North Koreans in the fighting has not had a significant impact on the situation,” Yevgen Yerin told AFP. “It is not such a significant number of personnel.” The revelation comes as Ukraine faces a somber Christmas season, with the latest Russian missile strike targeting an apartment building in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
Missile Attacks Mar Christmas Spirit
The deadly Christmas Eve attack, which killed one person and injured 15 others, underscores the unrelenting nature of Russia’s invasion even during a traditionally peaceful time. Ukrainian officials denounced the targeting of civilian infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih.
While other countries of the world are celebrating Christmas, Ukrainians are continuing to suffer from endless Russian attacks.

Across Ukraine, families are grieving loved ones lost in the conflict as they mark the holiday season. Many are visiting cemeteries to place Christmas trees and lights on the graves of fallen soldiers. The war’s toll is felt heavily as the fighting grinds on into its third calendar year.
North Korean Soldiers Learning on the Battlefield
While downplaying the combat role of North Korean troops, the Ukrainian intelligence official acknowledged that their presence serves another purpose. “They are also learning. And we cannot underestimate the enemy,” Yerin said. The prospect of battle-hardened North Korean forces armed with combat experience against a modern military is an unsettling one for many analysts.
Sabotage and Drone Warfare Continue
Against the backdrop of shifting troop dynamics, other elements of the war persist. A Russian court handed down a 22-year prison sentence to a man for two acts of sabotage on railway lines in the annexed Crimean Peninsula last year. Ukraine also reported downing 36 of 60 drones launched by Russia in the latest wave of aerial attacks, highlighting the ongoing intensity of the conflict on multiple fronts.
An Uncertain Path Forward
As the war approaches the three-year mark, the involvement of North Korean troops adds another complicated layer to an already complex and brutal conflict. While their impact may be limited militarily at present, their presence and the knowledge they are gaining on the battlefield could have long-term implications.
For Ukrainians facing yet another wartime Christmas, the focus remains on survival, supporting one another through grief, and pushing ahead in their resistance against Russian aggression. The road ahead remains uncertain, but their resolve in the face of missile strikes, drone attacks, and foreign fighters alongside their enemy remains unshakable.
