Deadly Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Kill 20, Including Children

In a heart-wrenching development, at least 20 Palestinians, including children, have been killed in the latest round of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, according to Palestinian medics. The attacks targeted a tent encampment in al-Mawasi, an Israel-declared humanitarian zone, leaving eight dead, including two children. Six more fatalities occurred when an aid convoy came under fire, while an attack on a vehicle within al-Mawasi claimed two additional lives.

Hospitals Under Attack

The al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah reported receiving three bodies following an airstrike on a school turned shelter in the densely populated Nuseirat refugee camp. Meanwhile, the head of Kamal Adwan hospital, one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza, revealed that Israel had ordered the facility’s evacuation—a near-impossible task given the lack of ambulances and the ongoing bombardment.

We currently have nearly 400 civilians inside the hospital, including babies in the neonatal unit, whose lives depend on oxygen and incubators. We cannot evacuate these patients safely without assistance, equipment, and time.

Civilian Suffering Intensifies

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are sheltering on Gaza’s exposed Mediterranean coastline, facing harsh winter conditions with inadequate shelter, food, and fuel. As temperatures plummet and storms batter the region, makeshift tents have been destroyed, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Oxfam reported that only 12 out of 34 trucks carrying vital food and water have managed to distribute aid to starving civilians in northern Gaza over the past 10 weeks due to “deliberate delays and systematic obstructions” by the Israeli military. Families are resorting to burning plastic rubbish to keep warm, while some parents are urging their children not to play to conserve energy as food and water run scarce.

Ceasefire Talks Progress

Amid the escalating violence, Palestinian groups involved in the fighting have indicated that a ceasefire deal is “closer than ever,” provided Israel refrains from imposing new conditions. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued a rare joint statement following talks in Cairo, signaling significant progress in recent days.

However, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich maintained that the country needed a “big deal that does not include surrender to Hamas” in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of not harming the “great war achievements.” The conflicting stances underscore the challenges in reaching a sustainable ceasefire agreement.

The Human Cost

Since the war began in October 2023, Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of more than 45,200 Palestinians in Gaza, with women and children accounting for over half of the fatalities, according to the Gaza health ministry. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble, while tens of thousands have been wounded.

The Israeli military asserts that it has killed more than 17,000 militants, though it has not provided evidence to support this claim. The ongoing conflict has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless Palestinians, who continue to bear the brunt of the violence and the dire humanitarian consequences that follow.

As the international community watches with growing concern, the urgent need for a lasting ceasefire and a resolution to the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict has never been more apparent. The lives of innocent civilians hang in the balance, and the world must come together to support a path towards peace, justice, and stability for all those affected by this devastating war.
