Cavaliers Lose Defensive Anchor Okoro For Multiple Weeks With Shoulder Injury

The Cleveland Cavaliers, owners of the NBA’s top record at 23-4, were dealt an unfortunate setback on Thursday as the team announced forward Isaac Okoro will miss at least two weeks with a sprained right shoulder. The injury occurred during the third quarter of Cleveland’s impressive road victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 16.

Okoro, the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has blossomed into one of the league’s premier defensive aces. His ability to guard multiple positions and stifle opposing stars has been a key factor in the Cavaliers’ early-season success. Through 23 appearances this season, including 16 starts, the Auburn product is averaging 6.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 21 minutes per game.

Developing Offensive Game

While known primarily for his defensive prowess, Okoro has made significant strides on the offensive end. The 22-year-old is converting a career-best 49.2% of his three-point attempts, a testament to his tireless work ethic and commitment to expanding his skill set. Okoro’s development as a reliable 3-and-D wing played a crucial role in earning him a three-year, $38 million contract extension with the Cavaliers in September.

Next Man Up Mentality

As the Cavaliers await Okoro’s return, they may turn to offseason addition Max Strus to help fill the void. Strus, who averaged 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 70 starts for Cleveland last season, has yet to make his 2024-25 debut due to a severe ankle injury sustained during a preseason workout. However, head coach Kenny Atkinson recently indicated that the 27-year-old sharpshooter is “awfully close” to rejoining the rotation.

Max has been practicing hard the past couple weeks and looking great. We’re excited to have him back in the fold soon.

Upcoming Tests

The shorthanded Cavaliers will face a pair of formidable opponents this weekend, hosting the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday and the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. The Bucks are fresh off winning the second NBA Cup earlier this week, while the 76ers boast a star-studded lineup featuring Joel Embiid, James Harden, and Tyrese Maxey.

  • Cavaliers vs. 76ers: Dec. 21, 7:00 PM ET

As one of the NBA’s elite teams, the Cavaliers have the depth and resilience to weather Okoro’s absence. However, there’s no denying the third-year pro’s immense value as a defensive stopper and emerging offensive threat. Cleveland fans will eagerly await further updates on Okoro’s status, hoping for a speedy recovery and triumphant return to the hardwood.
