In a heartwarming display of resilience and determination, three exceptional college football players – Tyler Shough, Raheim “Rocket” Sanders, and Ike Larsen – have been named the winners of the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award. Their awe-inspiring journeys of overcoming adversity have captured the hearts of fans and peers alike, solidifying their status as true heroes both on and off the field.
Tyler Shough: A Seventh-Year Sensation
Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough’s path to glory was anything but smooth. The seventh-year player began his collegiate career at Oregon, leading the Ducks to a Pac-12 championship in 2020 before transferring to Texas Tech. However, a series of devastating injuries – a broken collarbone in 2021, a shoulder injury in 2022, and a broken left fibula in 2023 – threatened to derail his dreams.
Undeterred, Shough transferred to Louisville for the 2024 season, where he started all 12 games and finished fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 3,195 passing yards and fifth with 23 touchdown passes. His remarkable performances, including three 300-yard games, propelled the Cardinals to an impressive 8-4 record.
“Tyler’s unwavering commitment to his recovery and his team is a testament to his character and love for the game,” a close source revealed. “He never once let the setbacks define him; instead, he used them as fuel to come back stronger than ever.”
Raheim Sanders: Overcoming Injury and Adversity
South Carolina running back Raheim “Rocket” Sanders faced his own set of challenges. As a sophomore at Arkansas in 2022, Sanders was the SEC’s second-leading rusher with 1,443 yards. However, a knee issue and a severe shoulder injury requiring complex surgery limited him to just six games in 2023.
Transferring to South Carolina for the 2024 season, Sanders dedicated himself to rehabilitation, earning praise from athletic trainers for his unwavering commitment. His hard work paid off as he finished third in the SEC with 881 rushing yards and fifth with 11 rushing touchdowns, while also leading conference running backs with 316 receiving yards on 27 catches.
“Raheim’s journey is a powerful reminder that with determination and support, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles,” a teammate shared. “His success this season is a testament to his resilience and the strength of the human spirit.”
Ike Larsen: Triumph Over Mental Health Struggles
Utah State safety Ike Larsen’s comeback story is one of courage and vulnerability. In 2021, his first year with the Aggies, Larsen faced immense personal challenges as his parents battled COVID-19, with his mother in a coma for most of the football season. Compounding his struggles, Larsen also endured a difficult breakup with his longtime girlfriend.
On National Suicide Prevention Day, Larsen bravely shared his story of contemplating taking his own life on December 12, 2021. With the support of loved ones, coaches, and teammates, he sought therapy and learned vital coping skills. Larsen’s resilience shone through as he earned All-Mountain West second-team honors in 2022 and first-team recognition in 2023, finishing as the Aggies’ second-leading tackler with 80 stops, nine pass breakups, and one interception.
“Ike’s openness about his mental health journey has inspired countless individuals facing similar struggles,” a coach remarked. “His courage to seek help and commitment to personal growth exemplify the true meaning of strength and leadership.”

The Comeback Player of the Year Award recognizes not only outstanding athletic achievements but also the indomitable human spirit.
