Ravens Honor Longtime Coach Joe D’Alessandris with “My Cause, My Cleats”

The NFL’s annual “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative allows players and coaches to spotlight causes close to their hearts through custom footwear. This Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff will use the platform to honor one of their own – beloved offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris, who passed away from a heart attack on August 25 at the age of 70.

A Fitting Tribute for Coach Joe D

The custom cleats, which will be worn by Ravens coaches during their game against the Denver Broncos, feature an image of D’Alessandris’ famous smile along with his nickname, “Coach Joe D.” Head coach John Harbaugh was visibly moved when he first saw the shoes, remarking:

“Look at that smile. It’s a thing of beauty. I’m going to wear it with pride.”

– John Harbaugh, Ravens Head Coach

The Ravens shared a photo of the cleats on their official Twitter account, with Harbaugh’s heartfelt reaction: “Coach Joe D, look at that smile, a thing of beauty. Deserving of this honor, we’ll be proud to wear it.”

A Legacy of Toughness and Mentorship

D’Alessandris, known for his old-school work ethic and no-nonsense approach, spent the last seven seasons coaching the Ravens’ offensive line. During his tenure, he mentored an impressive five Pro Bowl linemen:

  • Marshal Yanda
  • Ronnie Stanley
  • Orlando Brown Jr.
  • Tyler Linderbaum
  • Kevin Zeitler

His impact on the team extended far beyond technique and strategy. D’Alessandris was a father figure to many, instilling the values of hard work, resilience, and brotherhood in his players.

An Unexpected Loss

Coach Joe D’s passing came as a shock to the Ravens organization. He had been hospitalized due to complications from a heart valve repair surgery and succumbed to a heart attack just 11 days before the start of the regular season.

The team has worn a helmet decal with “Joe D” throughout the season in remembrance, but the “My Cause, My Cleats” tribute will serve as an even more powerful and public display of their love and respect for their fallen coach.

Carrying on Coach Joe D’s Legacy

As the Ravens take the field against the Broncos, Coach Joe D’s presence will be felt through the custom cleats on the sidelines. More importantly, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the values he instilled in his players and fellow coaches.

“He’s deserving of this honor. We’re proud to wear it.”

– John Harbaugh, Ravens Head Coach

The Ravens’ offensive line, now under the guidance of assistant coaches Tee Martin and Ben Wilkerson, continues to perform at a high level, a testament to the foundation D’Alessandris built. As the team pushes toward the playoffs, they carry with them the memory of their beloved Coach Joe D – his passion, his wisdom, and most of all, his unforgettable smile.
