Top Prospects Shine in Inaugural CHL-USA Challenge

The inaugural CHL-USA Prospects Challenge held this week in Ontario provided an exhilarating glimpse into the future stars of the NHL. Teams, scouts and fans alike relished the rare opportunity to witness the best draft-eligible players from the United States and Canada go head-to-head in a two-game showcase of elite talent.

Marquee Matchups

While a few top prospects were sidelined due to injury, including potential 2025 first overall pick James Hagens, the event still boasted an impressive collection of future NHL stars. The CHL roster featured a trio of players expected to be selected in the top five of the upcoming draft:

  • Porter Martone (Brampton) – Known for elevating his game in crucial moments, Martone entered as one of the favorites to go first overall in 2025.
  • Michael Misa (Saginaw) – The dynamic forward is on pace for one of the most prolific seasons by a draft-eligible player in OHL history.
  • Matthew Schaefer (Erie) – Widely regarded as the top defenseman in the class, Schaefer’s two-way game was on full display.

The USNTDP countered with their own impressive array of talent, led by forwards Jack Murtagh and William Moore. Defenseman Charlie Trethewey also drew significant attention in the absence of the injured Carter Amico.

Standout Performances

From the opening faceoff, the speed and skill level on the ice was palpable. Misa dazzled with his creativity, notching highlight-reel goals in both contests that left scouts salivating. An NHL scouting director in attendance raved about his vision and hockey sense:

“The way Misa sees the ice and finds the soft areas is special. Combine that with his elite skill set and he has the makings of a franchise player at the next level.”

Not to be outdone, Martone delivered a clutch performance in Game 2, notching two goals including the overtime winner. His undeniable flair for the dramatic had one scout gushing:

“Some guys just have that ‘it’ factor, and Martone’s got it in spades. He thrives under pressure and seems to always find a way to put his stamp on the game when it matters most.”

On the USNTDP side, Trethewey was a workhorse, logging major minutes and impressing with his poise and ability to drive play from the back end. Murtagh and Moore also had their moments, showcasing the high-end offensive abilities that make them probable first round picks in 2025.

Depth on Display

While the top prospects deservedly garnered the lion’s share of attention, the event also highlighted the impressive depth of talent on both rosters. The CHL’s supporting cast featured several potential top 20 picks:

  • Caleb Desnoyers – A gifted playmaker who excels at creating scoring chances for himself and his linemates.
  • Lynden Lakovic – Hasn’t put up gaudy numbers but possesses a tantalizing combo of size, skill and creativity.
  • Malcolm Spence – A tenacious agitator who drives opponents crazy and embodies the “hard to play against” ethos.
  • Blake Fiddler – The 6’4″ defenseman is an intimidating force around his own net and continues to refine his puck-moving ability.

Team USA also received contributions throughout their lineup, with 2026-eligible youngsters like Landon Hafele and Casey Mutryn taking advantage of the increased opportunity to showcase their talents.

Just the Beginning

While the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge offered an exciting preview of the 2025 NHL Draft class, it’s important to remember that it’s still early in the scouting process. Development camps, World Junior showcases, and a full season of regular play lie ahead. But for the scouts and lucky fans in attendance, it’s hard not to feel invigorated by the level of young talent on display.

“You watch these kids and can’t help but get excited about the future of our game. The skill, creativity and compete level seems to rise every year. It’ll be a real treat to track the progress of this group as the season unfolds.”

Regardless of which players rise or fall in the coming months, it’s safe to say the 2025 NHL Draft will inject a bevy of dynamic young stars into the league. And for a few memorable days in Ontario, fans got a tantalizing taste of the brilliant careers to come.
