The US Grand Prix served up a fresh dose of F1 drama as championship leader Max Verstappen and the McLaren team found themselves at odds over a controversial penalty handed to Lando Norris. The young Brit’s bold overtake on the Red Bull ace in the closing stages of the race ended in tears, with stewards deeming Norris had overstepped the track limits.
McLaren’s team principal Andreas Stella wasted no time in voicing his displeasure, branding the decision “inappropriate” and bemoaning the perceived inconsistency of the officiating. Norris himself echoed these sentiments, arguing that the stewards’ calls often seem to lack rhyme or reason.
Verstappen Unmoved by McLaren’s Moans
Amidst the maelstrom of discontent emanating from the McLaren garage, one man remained remarkably unfazed. When quizzed about his rival’s penalty woes, Max Verstappen responded with characteristic bluntness:
No, I don’t. I mean, they complain about a lot lately anyway, but it’s very clear in the rules. Outside the white line, you cannot pass.
Max Verstappen
The Dutchman’s curt dismissal of McLaren’s grievances was more than just idle talk. Verstappen pointed to his own experiences of falling foul of the regulations, most notably a costly podium-stripping penalty at the very same venue back in 2017 following a tussle with Kimi Raikkonen.
Advantage Verstappen in Title Chase
While the Norris incident may have left a sour taste for some, there’s no denying it played out in Verstappen’s favor. The penalty shuffle saw the Red Bull man promoted to third, padding his already substantial championship lead to a formidable 57 points.
Yet despite this welcome boost, Verstappen admitted to some frustrations with his team’s performance on the day. Having dominated Saturday’s sprint, hopes were high for a Sunday surge, but the RB19 failed to find its expected pace when it mattered most.
I did hope for a little bit more performance today, that’s why we have to analyse why we weren’t that good. I think everyone is a little bit better or the same as yesterday, but we were definitely worse.
Max Verstappen
