In the heart of Hong Kong, a fascinating exhibition at the Blue Lotus Gallery takes visitors on a captivating journey through the former Kowloon Walled City. “Voices of the Walls” showcases a unique blend of vintage photographs and AI-generated imagery, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this urban enclave home.
Stepping into the Past: Photographs of Kowloon Walled City
Photographers Ian Lambot and Greg Girard extensively documented Kowloon Walled City in the years leading up to its demolition in 1994. Their powerful images capture the essence of this unique community, where an estimated 50,000 people once lived within a mere 6.4 acres.
From the cramped living quarters to the bustling alleyways, Lambot and Girard’s photographs offer an intimate look at daily life within the Walled City. Children play on rooftops, families gather in tiny apartments, and entrepreneurs run businesses in spaces no larger than a closet. These images serve as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Walled City’s residents.
The Walled City gave a home to poor people, people without hope. If we had turned our backs on it, there would have been nobody left to help them.

Reimagining the Walled City: AI-Generated Art
Alongside the photographs, “Voices of the Walls” features captivating AI-generated artwork by artist Bianca Tse. Using the photographs as a reference, Tse employs artificial intelligence to create stunning visual interpretations of the Walled City, blurring the line between reality and imagination.
Tse’s AI-generated images offer a fresh perspective on the Walled City, allowing viewers to explore the neighborhood through a new lens. By combining elements from the photographs with her own creative vision, Tse breathes new life into the stories of the Walled City and its inhabitants.
I began to use AI and see it as a time machine to help reimagine the past. Since starting my project, I reached out to Greg for permission to reference his photographs, and I truly appreciate his open-mindedness and guidance as we create the “untaken photo” together.

A Community Unlike Any Other
The Kowloon Walled City was a unique urban phenomenon, born from a complex history of colonial rule and political uncertainty. Despite its reputation as a hotbed of crime and poverty, the Walled City was also home to a vibrant community of families, entrepreneurs, and artists.
The exhibition highlights the resilience and adaptability of the Walled City’s residents, who created a functioning society within the confines of the densely populated enclave. From the rooftop playgrounds to the bustling noodle factories, “Voices of the Walls” offers a nuanced portrayal of life in the Walled City.
The Walled City nourished people who didn’t have a Hong Kong identity card or any money to live on. Others earned a living there, maybe through crime, but they also helped other people get by.

As we look to the future, exhibitions like “Voices of the Walls” serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the diverse communities that make up our world.
In the years since its demolition, the Walled City has attained a kind of punk immortality for its visual aesthetic as a modernist dystopia mixing filth, darkness, and haphazard concrete construction into a single unsettling yet irresistible brew.
