Jacob Furphy Commits to UConn, Calling it the ‘Perfect Fit’

In a move that’s sending ripples through the college basketball world, rising Australian star Jacob Furphy has committed to the University of Connecticut, calling it the “perfect fit” for his game and aspirations.

Furphy Praises Hurley’s Intensity and Modern System

The 18-year-old wing, known for his high basketball IQ, motor, and toughness, was drawn to UConn by head coach Dan Hurley’s renowned intensity and the Huskies’ modern, European-style system.

It’s their work ethic, and the way coach Hurley goes about his business. Coach is very energetic and enthusiastic. He drives his players to be the best they can every single day, and I feel like that’s what I need to get better and go where I wanna go.

Jacob Furphy on why he chose UConn

Furphy, a 6’6″ scorer who can connect from all three levels and make high-level reads, believes his skillset aligns seamlessly with Hurley’s system. UConn is fresh off back-to-back NCAA titles and boasted the nation’s top offensive rating last season.

Standing Out at the NBA Academy Games

UConn assistant Luke Murray led Furphy’s recruitment after being wowed by the Tasmanian prospect’s performance at the NBA Academy Games in July. Furphy averaged an impressive 16.8 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 46.4% from deep in Australia’s FIBA U18 Asia Cup triumph in September.

I think I fit their system perfectly. They’re very European in the way they play, really modern. The thing that excites me about it is that I’ve been playing like that my whole life.

Making His Boomers Debut

Before arriving in Storrs in 2025, Furphy will make his senior national team debut with the Australian Boomers in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers against Thailand and Korea. While not expected to see significant minutes, he’s excited to be around the squad’s NBL talent.

I’m not really worried about whether or not I play. I just wanna get over there and enjoy the experience, and see how my teammates go about it, and the culture they have. It’s going up against them, but also seeing how they go about their day, and how they go about tournament play.

Furphy on his upcoming Boomers experience

With his unique blend of skills, basketball IQ, and competitive fire, Jacob Furphy looks poised to be the next Australian sensation to make waves in the American college ranks and beyond. UConn fans have plenty of reason to be excited about the future with this perfect match.
