Trump’s Victory: The Abandonment of Civil Society’s Morality

In a stunning and deeply troubling turn of events, Donald Trump has emerged victorious in the 2024 US presidential election, signaling a profound shift in the moral landscape of American society. This outcome, according to many observers, reflects a willful abandonment of the principles of civic responsibility and concern for the greater good that have long been the bedrock of a functioning democracy.

The Failure of Civic Education

At the heart of Trump’s success lies a systemic failure in civic education across the United States. Over the past several decades, public schools have increasingly limited access to the kind of robust civic learning that instills in students a deep understanding of their roles and responsibilities as citizens in a democratic society. As a result, a significant portion of the electorate now lacks the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to engage meaningfully with the political process and make informed decisions at the ballot box.

The people who support Trump are not less smart, but they are truly less well educated in these basic principles. It is this that makes it possible for them to abandon the morality of civil society.

Choosing Fantasy Over Reality

Trump’s supporters, it seems, have made a conscious choice to ignore the reality of his countless failings as a leader and human being. From his blatant mendacity and corrupt business dealings to his overt racism and misogyny, the evidence of Trump’s unfitness for office is overwhelming. Yet, his base has decided to live in a fantasy world where these glaring flaws are dismissed as mere “lies” perpetrated by his opponents.

They voted for him because they didn’t care that he was a mendacious, racist, misogynist, corrupt, ignorant, narcissistic conman and felon. They decided to ignore reality and live in a fantasy where all that was lies.

Betraying Voter Interests

Perhaps most tragically, Trump’s supporters have voted against their own best interests by enabling his return to power. Despite his grandiose promises, Trump’s policies during his previous term consistently favored the wealthy elite at the expense of working-class Americans. With his reelection, voters can expect further erosion of their health care access, rising costs due to ill-conceived tariffs, and an overall decline in their economic well-being.

Trump doesn’t care about for those who voted for him, and he will seek vengeance on all those who didn’t. Trump doesn’t serve anybody but himself.

The Dumbfounding Support of Women

Among the most puzzling aspects of Trump’s victory is the continued support he enjoys among a significant portion of female voters. Despite his long history of misogynistic behavior and policies that threaten women’s rights, many women have inexplicably chosen to cast their ballots for him. This deeply concerning trend suggests a profound disconnect between Trump’s actions and the values and interests of the women who support him.

As for the women who support Trump, I am dumbfounded.

The Road Ahead

As the nation comes to terms with the reality of another four years under Trump’s leadership, it is clear that the road ahead will be fraught with challenges. With the guardrails of civil society weakened and the voices of reason drowned out by the clamor of populist fervor, the very foundations of American democracy are at risk. It falls to those who still hold fast to the principles of justice, equality, and the common good to resist the tide of authoritarianism and work tirelessly to rebuild the moral fabric of the nation.

The triumph of Donald Trump in the 2024 election represents a watershed moment in American history, one that lays bare the deep fault lines in the country’s social and political landscape. As the nation grapples with the implications of this troubling outcome, it is imperative that citizens, educators, and leaders alike take a hard look at the systemic failures that have brought us to this point and commit to the hard work of rebuilding a society grounded in the values of empathy, responsibility, and the greater good. Only then can we hope to reclaim the promise of a truly democratic society.
