In a dazzling display of skill and artistry, Japanese figure skaters dominated the podium at Skate America, claiming gold medals in both the women’s and pairs events. The competition, which took place at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas, showcased the immense talent and dedication of these exceptional athletes.

Wakaba Higuchi’s Triumph

Wakaba Higuchi, a 23-year-old from Tokyo, delivered a flawless free skate to secure her first Grand Prix title after more than eight years of competing. Despite being fourth after the short program, Higuchi’s poise and precision in her free skate earned her a total score of 196.93 points, edging out her compatriot Rinka Watanabe, who took silver with 195.22 points.

I got excited with how well I was getting through the program and I rushed the jump, and immediately while I was in the air I was like, ‘Oh, that’s not a good thing to do.’

Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov, also representing the United States, secured the bronze.

It’s great to be back. It’s been a while since we won a competition so we are happy about that as well.

Levito’s Bronze and Tennell’s Comeback

American rising star Isabeau Levito, who led after the short program, earned the bronze medal despite a fall on her triple lutz in the free skate. Her total score of 194.83 points secured her a spot on the podium. Bradie Tennell, returning from a broken ankle, made a valiant effort but finished just off the podium in fourth place.

Men’s and Ice Dance Competitions Underway

In the men’s short program, reigning world champion Ilia Malinin of the United States held a slim lead over Japan’s Kao Miura, setting the stage for an exciting free skate. The ice dance competition also commenced with the rhythm dance, where a mistake by two-time defending world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates left them trailing Britain’s Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson.
