In a season full of promise and potential, the Indiana Hoosiers are holding their breath after star quarterback Kurtis Rourke exited Saturday’s game against Nebraska with a thumb injury. The sixth-year senior, who has emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate while leading the Hoosiers to their first 7-0 start since 1967, did not return for the second half of the team’s 56-7 rout of the Cornhuskers.
A Precautionary Measure
According to head coach Curt Cignetti, Rourke’s absence in the second half was a precautionary move after the quarterback hit his thumb on a helmet, causing his nail to come off. Despite the concerning visual, Cignetti expressed optimism about Rourke’s status moving forward.
We’ll know more tomorrow, but optimistic.

Before his exit, Rourke had already put together an impressive first-half performance, throwing for 189 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-21 passing. His lone blemish was an interception, but he had the Hoosiers comfortably ahead 28-7 at the break.
Backup Shines in Relief
In Rourke’s absence, backup quarterback Tayven Jackson stepped in and hardly missed a beat. The sophomore, who started five games for Indiana in 2023, completed 7-of-8 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns while leading four second-half scoring drives.
I thought he went in there and did a good job. The team had confidence, and I was proud of him.

Dominant Despite Adversity
Even with their star signal-caller sidelined, the Hoosiers continued to impose their will on a Nebraska defense that entered the game ranked seventh nationally in scoring defense. Indiana racked up 495 total yards and only punted once, while running back Justice Ellison gashed the Cornhuskers for 105 yards and two scores on the ground.
The Hoosier defense was equally impressive, intercepting highly-touted Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola three times in the lopsided affair. Cignetti believes the complete team effort sends a strong message about the program’s rise to prominence.
I think this says a lot about our team. Now I know there was a national perception that Nebraska had a pretty legit defense on a national scale, so that’ll open their eyes. But I think this is a great team win.

A Season on the Brink of History
At 7-0, Indiana finds itself on the cusp of the program’s first top-10 ranking since 2020. The Hoosiers will look to keep their perfect record intact when they host Washington next Saturday, but all eyes will undoubtedly be on the status of their offensive leader.
Rourke entered the weekend ranked first nationally in passer rating (192.11) and third in QBR (91.9), firmly entrenching himself in the Heisman Trophy conversation. His dynamic play has been the catalyst for Indiana’s resurgence, and his availability will be crucial as the Hoosiers navigate the back half of their schedule with lofty aspirations in mind.
For now, Indiana fans will anxiously await further updates on Rourke’s thumb, hoping that this is merely a minor bump in the road on what has the potential to be a truly special season in Bloomington. With a talented roster, a rising star at head coach, and a renewed sense of belief, the Hoosiers appear poised to make some noise on the national stage – provided their quarterback is healthy enough to lead the charge.
